Formany,thefearswerereal.Othersexaggeratedastheyfoughtanincreasinglyaggressiveanti-huntinglobbywhichhadrejectedacresofindependentevidenceaffirmingthathuntingisthemosthumanewayofkillingfoxes.Inthebattleto"fightprejudice,fighttheban",everyemotiveargumentwasdeployed.

Foritspart,theanti-huntingbrigadeextravagantlyclaimedthatthebanwouldputanendtotherichparadinginredjackets.AseniorLabourMP,PeterBradley,admittedinthisnewspaperthatitwas,asmanysuspected,about"classwar".Helosthisseatshortlyafterwards.Butpeopleinredcoatsdidnotdisappear.

Infact,noneoftheforecastscametrue.Whatdidhappenwassomethingnobodyhadpredicted:thespectacularrevivalandgrowthofhuntingwithhounds.Inshort,thehuntingbanhasbeenafailure.

Today,onthesecondanniversaryoftheban'scomingintoforceonFebruary18,2005,newfiguresshowthatparticipationinthesporthasneverbeenhigher.Itissocheerfulthattwonewpackshavebeenformed,somethingthathasnothappenedforcenturies.
