MITresearchersestimatedthevalueofprivatecarownershipanduseinfourUSmetroareas(Chicago,Dallas,SeattleandWashingtonDC)usingonlinediscretechoiceexperiments.Keyfindings:

•Onaverage,peoplewouldneedtobepaid$11,197togiveupaccesstotheir

privatelyownedvehicleforoneyear,whichisatleastasmuchasestimatesoftheaveragetotalprivatecostofvehicleownership(~$9,000).

•Morethanhalfofthisvalueisnon-usevalue–suchastheoptiontotravel

wheneverorwhereverneededatamoment’snoticeandthestatusthatcomesfromowningone’sownvehicle–beyondtheusevalueofgettingfromAtoB.

•Thisnon-usevaluewasoverthreetimeshigherduringtheCovid-19pandemic

•Thesefindingsemphasizetheneedtoprovidevalueandconvenienceifalternativemobilitysolutionsaretobewidelyadopted.
