InReadingPassageA,theauthorpresentsushisownlanguage

learningexperiencesfordifferentstages,fromjuniormiddleschoolto

aneffectthatresultsfromsomecauses.

Thisisanexampleofcauseandeffectwriting,whichmakesclear

thereasonswhysomethinghappensbyshowingtherelationbetween

acauseanditseffect.

verycleartous.

V.Summary

Learningaforeignlanguagewasoneofthemostdifficultyes

mostrewardingexperiences.Althoughattimes,learningalanguage

wasfrustrating,itwaswellworththeeffort.Injuniormiddleschool,

myforeignlanguageteacherpraisedallofthestudents.Ibenefitalot

fromthispositiveteachingmethod.Inseniormiddleschool,theteacher

alwayspunishedthosewhogaveincorrectanswers.SoIlostmyjoyin

answeringquestionsandmydesiretosayanythingatallinEnglish.In

college,Ihadnoopportunitytospeakinclass.Ifeltintimidated.Online

learningchangedeverything.Althoughitrequiresmuchtime,

commitmentanddisciplinetokeepupwiththeflowofthecourse,I

succeededinforeignlanguagelearning.Learningaforeignlanguage

hadbeenamosttryingexperience.Ihavelearntinsightsintoanother

cultureaswellasthelanguagepoints.

I.Readingskills

Mostexperiencedreaderstrytoguessthemeaningofunfamiliar

wordsthroughcontextclues.Inordertomakemeaningsclear,good

writersoftenprovideorgivesuchcluesforreaders.Itisalwaysagood

ideatolearnthedifferentkindsofcluesyoumightcomeacrossinyour

reading.

Herearesomeofthecontextclues:

1.Somesentencessetoffthedefinitionforadifficultwordby

usingpunctuation.

2.Sometimeshelpingwords,alongwithpunctuation,provide

importantclues.

3.Somesentencestelltheoppositeofwhatanewwordsmeans.

Fromitsopposite,youcanfigureoutthemeaningoftheword.

4.Sometimesyoucanuseyourownexperiencestofigureoutthe

definitionaword.

5.Sentencesbeforeorafterasentencethathasadifficultword

sometimesexplainthemeaningoftheword.

6.Somesentencesarewrittenjusttogivethedefinitionsofthe

difficultwords—wordsthatreaderswillneedtoknowinorderto

understandwhattheyarereading.

7.Becausesomesentencesgiveexamplesforanewword,youcan

buildadefinition.

8.Somesentencesuseawordyoudoknowtohelpexplainaword

youdonotknow.

9.Wordpartclues一stemsandaffixesalsohelptofindoutword

meaning.

e.g.:l.Itwillbeveryhardbutalsoverybrittle...thatis,itwillbreakeasily.

从后面的解释中我们可以了解到brittle是“脆”的意思。

2.Sheisusuallypromptfbrallherclass,buttodayshearrivedinthe

middleofherfirstclass.but一词表转折,因此其前后的意思正相反。后半句

的意思是她今天“第一节上了一半才来”,因此反向推理,可得出她平时一向

“准时”的结论。

3.Perhaps,wecanseesomepossibilitiesfornextfiftyyears,

possibility是possible的同根名词,据此可以断定possibility意

思是“可能性”。

4.Thelackofmovementcausedthemusclestoweaken.

Sometimestheweaknesswaspermanent.Sotheplayercouldnever

playthesportagain.从后面的结果“永远不能再运动''中,可以推测

permanent的意思为“永远的,永久的
