Priortothe20thcentury,manylanguageswithsmallnumbersofspeakerssurvivedforcenturies.Theincreasingly

powerfulforcesappeartoworkagainstit:populationgrowth,whichpushesmigrantpopulationsintotheworld'slast

isolatedlocations;masstourism;globaltelecommunicationsandmassmedia;andthespreadofgiganticglobalcorporations.

Alloftheseforcesappeartosignifyafutureinwhichthelanguageofadvertising,popularculture,andconsumerproducts

becomesimilar.AlreadyEnglishandafewothermajortongueshaveemergedasgloballanguagesofcommerceand

communication.Formanyoftheworld'speoples,learningoneoftheselanguagesisviewedasthekeytoeducation,

economicopportunity,andabetterwayoflife.

Onlyabout3,000languagesnowinuseareexpectedtosurvivethecomingcentury.Aremostoftherestdoomedin

thecenturyafterthat?Whethermostoftheselanguagessurvivewillprobablydependonhowstronglyculturalgroupswish

tokeeptheiridentityalivethroughanativelanguage.Todosowillrequireanemphasisonbilingualism(masteryoftwo

languages).Bilingualspeakerscouldusetheirownlanguageinsmallerspheres——athome,amongfriends,incommunity

settings—andagloballanguageatwork,indealingswithgovernment,andincommercialspheres.Inthisway,manysmall
