Themobileindustrycontinuestounderpinthe

rapiddigitaltransformationinAsiaPacific,with

advancedmobilenetworksenablinginnovative

usecasesforconsumersandenterprises.Therole

Bytheendof2023,1.8billionpeopleinAsiaPacific

(63%ofthepopulation)subscribedtoamobile

service.Growthinmobileinternetpenetrationhas

beenremarkable.Attheendof2023,51%ofthe

region’spopulationusedmobileinternet,equating

tojustover1.4billionusers–almosttriplethe

figureadecadeearlier.However,largeswathes

ofthepopulationacrosstheregionstillremain

unconnected,mostofthemwithintheusagegap.1

Addressingtheusagegapiscrucialtoclosing

thedigitaldivideandenablinglife-enhancing

applicationsaroundfinance,healthandeducation.

Theimpactofmobileconnectivityisevidencedby

itscontributiontotheeconomy.In2023,mobile

technologiesandservicesgenerated5.3%of

AsiaPacific’sGDP,acontributionthatamounted

to$880billionofeconomicvalueadded,and

supportedaround13millionjobsacrosstheregion.

ByApril2024,49operatorgroupshadsignedup

totheGSMAOpenGateway,representing240

mobilenetworksandaccountingfor65%ofmobile

connectionsglobally.OperatorsacrossAsia

Pacifichavejoinedtheinitiative,includingthosein

Australia,Indonesia,Japan,Malaysia,Singapore,

SouthKorea,SriLanka,ThailandandVietnam.The

focusisnowontranslatingoperatorcommitments

intocommerciallyavailablenetworkAPIsand

demonstrableusecases.

Duetothegeographicalmake-upofseveral

countriesinAsiaPacific,aerialconnectivity

willplayanimportantroleinrealisinguniversal

connectivity.Fromarchipelagosandrainforests

todesertsandmountainranges,AsiaPacificis

hometosomeofthemostchallengingterrains

forterrestrialnetworks.Asaresult,therehas

historicallybeensignificantinterestinaerial

solutionsandtheopportunitytheyofferto

helpextendconnectivitytohard-to-reach

locations.Thisinteresthasbeenheightenedby

theemergenceoflowEarthorbit(LEO)and

high-altitudeplatformstation(HAPS)solutions.

Importantly,telecomsoperatorsacrossthe

regionareactivelyengagedintheevolvingaerial

connectivitymarket,mostlythroughpartnerships

andinvestments.

OperatorsacrossAsiaPacificareharnessingthe

immediateopportunities.Moreover,leveraging

foroperators.Exploringnewrevenuestreams,

languagemodels(LLMs).TailoredLLMsmakeit

easierforoperatorstodeployhigh-qualitygenAI

modelsswiftlyandefficiently,helpingthemto

Consumertrust:stakeholderstake

stepstoenhanceonlinesafety

andenterprises,thereisariskthatconsumer

trustindigitalserviceswillerode.Meanwhile,the

proliferationofadvancedAItools,notablygenAI

applications,addsanewdimensiontothethreat

landscapebypotentiallyenablingnewtypes

ofattacksandmakingexistingonesharderto

detect.Suchattackscanhaveaprofoundimpact

onvictims,includingfinanciallossesandamental

toll,resultinginalossoftrustindigitalplatforms.

Whilegovernmentsanddigitalecosystemplayers

ofmaintainingtrustmustbeviewedasashared

responsibilitybetweenthesestakeholders,as

opposedtothesoleresponsibilityofanysingle

Forthemobileindustrytoadvanceanddeliver

ondigitaltransformationambitions,thepolicy

andregulatoryenvironmentrequiresanapproach

thatsupportsaconduciveenvironmentforrapid

growthandinnovation.Policiesthatwillhave

akeyroletowardsthisobjectiveincludethose

thatpromoteinvestmentinnetworks,reduce

taxationburdens,promoteeaseofdoingbusiness

byreducingonerouscompliancecosts,improve

efficiency,andfosterinclusivityandonlinetrust

andsafety.Similarly,asdemandforhigh-speed,

high-qualitymobileconnectivitycontinuestogrow,

2023(WRC-23)openedthedoorstoaneweraof

connectivityandlaidthespectrumfoundations

formobiletoprogressinto5G-Advancedand6G.

Importantly,WRC-23identified6GHz(6.425–

7.125GHz)formobileusebycountriesinevery

ITURegion(EMEA,CIS,theAmericasandAsia

Pacific)andtheconditionsforitsusehavebeen

agreedintheITU’sRadioRegulations.Countries

inAsiaPacificcannowtakeadvantageofthe

harmonisationof6GHzthatwasachievedat

WRC-23andbegindevelopingnationalplansto

assigntheband.With6GHz,mobileoperators

canmeetthegrowthin5Gtrafficdemandina

practical,cost-effectiveandenvironmentally

friendlywayusingexisting5Gmacrosites.

thelastdecadetoover1.4billion.Growthduring

thisperiodwaslargelydrivenbytheexpansionof

mobilebroadbandnetworks,withthecoverage

gapnowunder2%inmostmarketsacrossthe

region.

Theusagegaphasalsonarrowedonaggregate

butremainsstubbornlyhighinsomemarkets,

notablyBangladesh,IndiaandPakistan,where

50%ormoreofthepopulationarecovered

bymobileinternetnetworksbuthavenotyet

subscribedtotheservice.Keyadoptionbarriers

includelackofaffordability,particularlyfor

devices,andlackofdigitalskills,particularly

amongoldercitizens.Forexample,theJapanese

tounderservedregionsintheshort-to-medium

whichreached$510billion.Thedirectcontribution

bythemobileecosystemwasalsosignificantat

$280billion.

Themobileecosystemcomprisesthree

categories:mobileoperators;infrastructureand

equipmentproviders;andcontentandservices.

Theinfrastructureandequipmentcategory

includesnetworkequipmentproviders,device

manufacturersandIoTcompanies.Meanwhile,
