oneofthefewareasinEuropetoholdthecounciPsdiplomafornaturereservesofthehighestquality,andDr.PeterBaum

hadcometopresentittotheparkonceagain.Hewasafraidthatpublicopinionwasturningagainstnationalparks,and

thatthosesetupinthe1960sand1970scouldnotbesetuptoday.ButDr.Baumclearlyremainedastrongsupporterof

theviewthatnaturalenvironmentsneededtobeallowedtosurviveinpeaceintheirownright.

“Noareacouldbeexpectedtosurvivebothasatruenaturereserveandasatouristattraction,“hewenton.The

short-sighted(眼光短浅的)viewthatreserveshadtoserveimmediatehumandemandsforoutdoorrecreationshouldbe

humanbeings.Thesewillnotberejectedbythebody,asisthecasewithorgansfromhumans.

Theapplicationofbiotechnologytoenergyproductionseemsevenmorepromising.In1996thefamousscience,

fictionwriter,ArthurC.Clarke,manyofwhosepreviouspredictionshavecometrue,saidthatwemaysoonbeableto

developremarkablycheapandrenewablesourcesofenergy.Someofthesepowersourceswillbebiological.Clarkeand

othershavewarnedusrepeatedlythatsoonerorlaterwewillhavetogiveupourdependenceonnon-renewablepower

sources.Coal,oilandgasareindeedconvenient.However,usingthemalsomeanscreatingdangerouslyhighlevelsof

pollution.Itwillbeimpossibletomeetthegrowingdemandforenergywithoutincreasingthatpollutiontocatastrophic

(灾难性的)levelsunlesswedeveloppowersourcesthatarebothcheaperandcleaner.

Itisattemptingtothinkthatbiotechnologyorsomeother"scienceofthefuturecansolveourproblems.Beforewe

surrendertothattemptationweshouldremembernuclearpower.Onlyafewgenerationsagoitseemedtopromise

limitless,cheapandsafeenergy.TodaythosepromiseslieburiedinaconcretegraveinaplacecalledChernobyl,inthe

Inasecondstudy,15elderlypeoplewhocompleteda6-monthaerobic-trainingcoursewerefasteratattentiontasks

comparedwith14seniorswhojustdidstretchingandtoningexercisesforthesameamountoftime.

So,evengoingforawalkevery2or3daysforjust10to45minutescanhelp.Thatshouldbegoodnewsforyour

grandparents.

Theeffectsofexercisingonthebrainsofyoungerpeoplehaven'tbeenstudiedyet.Still,itcan'thurttotakeoccasional
