In2018,Russianscientiststookasoilsamplefromdeepinthepermanentlyfrozenground

inSiberiainRussia.Theydiscoveredtwotinyroundnematodes(线虫)frozeninthesample,which

weresosmallthattheycouldonlybeseenwithamicroscope.Testsshowedthesoilhadbeenfrozen

forabout46,000yearsold.Whenthenematodeswereplacedinroomtemperature,theybeganto

move.Thenematodesaretheoldestlivinganimalseverbroughtbacktolifeafterbeingfrozen.

Thediscoverymakesupfortheresearchonhowlivingthingscansurviveintoughconditions.

Nematodescanliveforyearsifthey'refrozen.Theycanenteraspecialstatecalled

cryptobiosis(隐生现象),duringwhichanimalsreducetheiractivitiesandconsumeverylittle

energy.Beforethis,thelongestnematodehadbeenknowntosurvivethroughcryptobiosiswasabout

25years.Beingrevivedafter46,000yearswasanewrecordforanykindofanimal.

ThenematodesweresentofftoGermanytobestudiedfurther.Theresearchersfoundthetwo

nematodeswereanewspeciesofnematodethathadnotyetbeendiscovered.That'snottoo

surprising,sincetherearesomanyspeciesofnematodes.Theyalsofoundthenematodeswereable

tosurvivebeingfrozenbetteriftheyweredriedoutalittlefirst.Thedryinghelpedthemproduce

aspecialsugarcalledtrehalose(海藻糖),whichhelpedthemsurvivebeingfrozen.Thescientists

alsostudiedanematodespeciesthatiscommonthesedays.Theyfoundthatitalsousesthesugar

toprotectitselfincryptobiosis.

Bothofthenematodeswerefemales.Beforelong,theybegantohavebabies.Somekindsof

nematodes,includingthese,havetheabilityforasinglenematodetohavebabiesallbyitself.

UsingfurtherdatafromtheNationalDietandNutritionSurvey(NDNS),researcherscouldtell

thatpeopleintheUKeatanaverageof100gramsofmeatdaily,andtheaveragehigh-protein,

non-meat-eater(whoeatsfishandcheese)contributesonethirdofthegreenhousegasemissions

perkilogramthatameat-eaterdoes.

Thus,makingaconservativeassumptionthatcitizenswhoadaptedtheirdietswitchedtohigh

proteinnon-meatmealsonFridays,theresearchersestimatedthatthisequatedtoapproximately
