TheSeriesIIRTUoffersmanydesirablefeaturesinadditiontotheaboveitems,includingsmallphysicalsizeforeaseofmountingandhandling,changeableporttypes(e.g.RS232/485,PSTN,radiomodem),frontpanelstatusanddiagnosticdisplay.
SeriesIIRTUsmaybeconfiguredtouserI/O,communicationcircuitrequirements,powersupplyrequirementandprocessingfunctionalitybyselectingtheappropriatemodulesfromtherange.Selectedmodulesaresimplymountedtothebaseplateswithlittlerestrictionsandaresecuredwithasinglecaptivescrew.
ThesmallestSeriesIIRTUisconfiguredusingtheBA-4backplane,aPC-1processorandanI/Omodule(NotetheLP-1singleboardRTUisalsoavailable–pleasecontactyourKingfishersupplier).LargerRTUsareconfiguredfromBA-6orBA-12backplanestogetherwithaCP-11/21processormodule,apowersupply,I/Omodulesandcommunicationmodules.
TheSeriesIIRTU’ssizepermitsflexibleandsimplemountinginindustrystandardenclosures.AnRTUusingaBA-12backplanecanbe19”rackmounted.

•TheSeriesIIRTUsystemrequirespropergroundingforcorrectoperation.
1.6.1GroundConductors
•Groundconductorsshouldbeconnectedinatreefashionwithbranchesroutedtoacentralearthgroundpoint.Thisensuresthatnogroundconductorcarriescurrentfromanyotherbranch.Thismethodisshowninthefollowingfigure.

Equipmentgroundingrecommendationsandproceduresarelistedbelow.ThesegroundingproceduresmustbeproperlyfollowedforsafeoperationofyourSeriesIIRTUsystem.
1.6.3SafetyandReferenceGround
Themetalbackofthebackplaneisgroundedwhenproperlyinstalled.SafetyandReferencegroundconnectionsshouldbemadefromoneofthemountingtabstoearthgroundusingaminimumAWG#12wireandaringterminal.Useofanutandstarwasherforeachwireonthegroundconnectionlugisrecommendedtoensureadequategrounding.Ensurethepaintcoatingisremovedforthelugtomakegoodelectricalcontact.

Thebackplanemustbegroundedto
minimiseelectricalshockhazardthat
mayresultinseverepersonalinjury.
AllbackplanesgroupedtogetherinaSeriesIIRTUsystemmusthaveacommongroundconnection.Thisisespeciallyimportantforbackplanesthatarenotmountedinthesamecontrolcabinet.
ThebestwaytoprovidepropergroundconnectionsistoensurethattheSeriesIIRTUbackplanemetalframeisdirectlyconnectedtothecontrolpanelinwhichthebackplaneorbackplanesaremounted.Thiscanbeaccomplishedbyconnectingagroundstrapfromoneofthegroundlugsoneithersideofthebackplanetothecontrolpanelorcabinetfollowingapplicableelectricalsafetycodes.
1.6.4ShieldGround
Thesteelbackplaneisusedformoduleshieldgrounding.Shieldconnectionstotheuserterminalconnectoronthemoduleareroutedtothebackplanethroughconductorsonthemodule.
1.6.5ProgrammingDeviceGrounding
Forproperoperation,theprogrammerforSeriesIIRTU(IBMPCorcompatiblecomputer)musthaveagroundconnectionincommonwiththeCPUbackplane.Normally,thiscommongroundconnectionisprovidedbyensuringthattheprogrammer'spowercordisconnectedtothesamepowersource(withthesamegroundreferencepoint)asthebackplane.TheSerialRS232cablealsocarriesagroundwireandifproperlyfixedwillsuffice.
