①can和beableto都表示能力,意思上没多大区别。但can只有现在和过去时,而beableto则有更多的形式。但当成功地完成某一具体动作时,通常不用could而用was/wereableto来表示。这时was/wereableto相当于managedto,表示经过一番努力,终于能够完成某事。如:Canyouusechopsticks?

1)must用在肯定句中表示较有把握的推测,意为"一定"。

2)must表对现在的状态或现在正发生的事情的推测时,must后面通常接系动词be的原形或行为动词的进行式。如:Youhaveworkedhardallday.Youmustbetired.你辛苦干一整天,一定累了。(对现在情况的推测判断)

Hemustbeworkinginhisoffice.他一定在办公室工作呢。比较:Hemustbestayingthere.他现在肯定在那里。

Hemuststaythere.他必须呆在那。

3)must表示对已发生的事情的推测时,must要接完成式。如:Ididn'thearthephone.Imusthavebeenasleep.我刚才没有听到电话,我想必是睡着了。

4)must表示对过去某时正发生的事情的推测,must后面要接不定式的完成进行式。如:—Whydidn'tyouanswermyphonecall?为何不接我的电话?

—Well,Imusthavebeensleeping,soIdidn'thearit.唉,肯定在睡觉,所以没有听见。

5)否定推测用can't。如:IfTomdidn'tleavehereuntilfiveo'clock,hecan'tbehomeyet.如果汤姆五点才离开这儿,他此时一定还未到家。

【知识梳理2】情态动词+have+过去分词1)must+have+donemust+have+done结构常用在肯定句中,表示对过去发生行为的推测,含有“一定”、“准是”的意思。否定和疑问句用can。ShemusthavestudiedEnglishbefore.她以前一定学过英语。Itmusthaverainedlastnight.昨晚一定下过雨。2)can’t/couldn’thavedonecan’t/couldn’thavedone结构用于对过去发生行为的否定推测,表示“不可能”。Hecan’t/couldn’thavefinishedthehomeworkbyhimself,forhespentmostofhistimeplayinggamesyesterday.他不可能是自己完成家庭作业的,因为昨天他玩了很久的游戏。3)couldhavedonecouldhavedone结构也可以表示对过去发生行为的推测,含有“可能已经……”的意思。Whatyoureferredtojustnowcanhavemadeherverysad.你刚刚所谈到的可能令他很伤心。但couldhavedone用于虚拟语气中,可以表示“本来有可能……而事实上未做到”。如:

Icouldhavecomeontime,butmycarbrokedownontheway.我原本可以准时到达的,但是我的车在路上抛锚了。4)shouldhavedone“should+have+过去分词”的结构,表示过去该做而实际上尚未做的动作或行为;其否定则表示发生了不应该发生的行为。其同义结构“oughttohave+过去分词”,表示过去“早应该”、“本当”之意,语气较强。如:Ishouldhavethoughtofthat.这一点我是应当想到的。(但没想到)Theyshouldnothaveleftsosoon.他们不应当走得这么早。(但已走了)而shouldn’thavedone/oughtn’ttohavedone则表示“本不应该做某事而实际上做了”。如:Youshouldn’thavesaidsuchwordstoyourparents.另外,shouldhavedone还有为“竟然做了某事”的意思。【巩固练习】基础题:1.—Whyaren’ttheyhereyet?
