ThispublicationprovidesanoverviewofhowWTWisapplyingleading-edgeresearchtosupportasmarterwaytoriskacrossindustries.

Whileweembracethecomplexityofscience,theWTWResearchNetwork(WRN)strivestoidentifyandcommunicatekeyriskinsightsinasimpleandrelevantway,tosupportriskmanagementand

strategydecisions.Wehopethattheoverviewofourresearchportfolioandtheindustry-specificpracticalexamplesofappliedresearchprovideaclearviewoftherisktopicswearefocusing

onandthatsomethinggrabsyourattention.

Thebreadthofourresearchtopicsgivesanideaofourconcernaboutthecurrentstateoftheworld:

Despiteourprogresssince2006,wearealltooawareoftheremaining“knowledge–action”gap,which

ispushingleadingscientiststocivildisobedience,togettheirvoicesheard.ThewordsofRussian-

Americanbiochemistandscience-fictionwriter

IsaacAsimovringparticularlytruethesedays:“The

saddestaspectofliferightnowisthatsciencegathersknowledgefasterthansocietygatherswisdom.”

Thisisareminderthattheaimofourresearch

portfolioisnotmerelytoturnscienceintouseable

dataandinformationthatfeedsintoriskmodels,but

alsotouseourimprovedyetimperfectknowledgewisely.Wiseusageofscientificknowledgeis

criticalforpublicunderstandingandsoundpolicy/strategyfortoday’skeychallenges—fromhumanhealthtoclimateactiontofoodsecurity.More
