ancienttimes.Whereassomeobjectshavebeencollectedfortheir

usefulness,othershavebeenselectedfortheiraestheticbeauty

alone.IntheUnitedStates,thekindsofcollectiblescurrently

popularrangefromtraditionalobjectssuchasstamps,coins,rare

books,andarttomorerecentitemsofinterestlikedolls,bottles,

baseballcards,andcomicbooks.

Interestincollectibleshasincreasedenormouslyduringthepast

decade,inpartbecausesomecollectibleshavedemonstratedtheir

valueasinvestments.Especiallyduringcyclesofhighinflation,

investorstrytopurchasetangiblesthatwillatleastretaintheir

currentmarketvalues.Ingeneral,themosttraditional

collectibleswillbesoughtbecausetheyhavepreservedtheirvalue

overtheyears,thereisanorganizedauctionmarketforthem,and

theyaremosteasilysoldintheeventthatcashisneeded.Some

examplesofthemoststablecollectiblesareoldmasters,Chinese

ceramics,stamps,coins,rarebooks,antiquejewelry,silver,

porcelain,artbywell-knownartists,autographs,andperiod

furniture.Otheritemsofmorerecentinterestincludeold

photographrecords,oldmagazines,postcards,baseballcards,art

glass,dolls,classiccars,oldbottles,andcomicbooks.These

relativelynewkindsofcollectiblesmayactuallyappreciatefaster

asshort-terminvestments,butmaynotholdtheirvalueaslong-term

investments.Onceacollectiblehashaditsinitialplay,it

appreciatesatafairlysteadyrate,supportedbyanincreasing

numberofenthusiasticcollectorscompetingforthelimitedsupply

ofcollectiblesthatbecomeincreasinglymoredifficulttolocate.

bevariedsavebymechanicalorstructuraldevices.

Thepianowasperfectedintheearlyeighteenthcenturybya

harpsichordmakerinItaly(thoughmusicologistspointoutseveral

previousinstancesoftheinstrument).Thisinstrumentwascalled

apianoeforte(sortandloud),toindicateitsdynamicversatility;

itsstringswerestruckbyarecoilinghammerwithafelt-padded

head.Thewiresweremuchheavierintheearlierinstruments.A

seriesofmechanicalimprovementscontinuingwellintothe

nineteenthcentury,includingtheintroductionofpedalstosustain

toneortosoftenit,theperfectionofametalframe,andsteel

wireofthefinestquality,finallyproducedaninstrumentcapable

ofmyriadtonaleffectsfromthemostdelicateharmoniestoanalmost

orchestralfullnessofsound,fromaliquid,singingtonetoasharp,

percussivebrilliance.
