Aftertheearthquake,allthenewspapersreportedmanystoriesaboutsomeofthefamilieswhowereintrouble.OneSunday,whenIwasreadinganewspaper,aspecialpicturetouchedme.Itgavetheclothingsizesofeachfamilymember.Ithoughtthatthiswouldbeagoodchancetoteachmychildrentohelpthosewhowerelessluckythanthemselves.Isaidtomysevenyearoldtwins,BradandBrett,andthreeyearoldMeghan,“Wehavesomuch,andthesepoorpeoplenowhavenothing.We'llsharewhatwehavewiththem.”Ifilledaboxwithfoodsandclothes.WhileIwasdoingthis,Iencouragedtheboystochoosetheirtoysanddonatesomeoftheirlessfavouritethings.Meghanwatchedquietlyastheboystookouttheiroldtoysandgamesandputthemtogether.Thenshewalkedaway.Afewminuteslater,shecamebackwithLucy,hermuchloveddoll.Sheputthedollontopoftheothertoys.“Oh,dear,”Isaid.“Youdon'thavetogiveLucy.Youlovehersomuch.”Meghansaid,“Lucymakesmehappy,Mummy.Maybeshe'llmakeanotherlittlegirlhappy,too.”IlookedatMeghanforalongmoment.Shetaughtmealesson.It'seasytogivesomethingthatwedon'twantanymore,buthardtogivewhatwecherish(珍爱),isn'tit?1.Thewriterhaschildren.A.oneB.twoC.threeD.four2.Theunderlinedword“donate”inParagraph3probablymeans“”.A.捐赠B.丢掉C.展出D.放好3.Lucyisthenameof.A.agirlB.agameC.adollD.anearthquake4.What'sthebesttitleofthispassage?A.AfamilystoryB.ThespiritofgivingC.ThewayofhelpingothersD.AsadexperienceBBuildingscrashedtothegroundinseconds.Thousandsofpeoplelosttheirlivesinaflash.SincetheyweretoldanearthquakewouldhitTokyoaroundSeptember16,Japanesepeoplehaven'tbeenabletogetthesethoughtsoutoftheirminds.TheyheardthenewsfromYoshioKushida,aresearcherwhousedradiowavestopredictthatanearthquakewouldstrikewithamagnitude(量级)ofatleastseven.“Itwouldbeterriblenottowarnpeopleofapossibledisasterincaseaquakeactuallyoccurs,”hesaid.Hiswarninghadabigeffect.FrightenedTokyopeoplehavebeenstockinguponwater,foodandcandlesinpreparationfortheterribleday.ButKushidahasn'thadmuchsupportfromtheexperts.Atpresent,predictingearthquakesisthoughttobeimpossible.Noonecantellexactlywhereorwhenthenextmajorearthquakewilloccur.Anearthquakebeginstensofmilesbelowtheearth'ssurface:it'stoofarawaytosee.AncientChineseandItalianscientistsforecastearthquakesbyspecial“earthquakeclouds”.Theyfoundthataweekbeforeanearthquake,therewereoftenstrangeclouds—shapedlikesnakes,wavesorfeathers—inthesky.Theythoughtthecloudsmightcomefromagasproducedundergroundbyanearthquake.Peoplealsousedtowatchanimalstoseeifearthquakeswerecoming.Whentheysawbirdsflyawaysuddenly,dogsbarkingviolentlyorfishjumpingoutofthewater,theytoldpeopletoleavethearea.Somescientistsbelievedanimalshadasharpersenseofchangestakingplaceunderground.Buttheancientmethodswerenotreliableenough.Nowadays,scientistsusespecialinstrumentstopredictearthquakes'moreprecisely(精确地).Satellitesystemsareveryuseful:theyrecordsmallchangesintheearth'smagneticfields(磁场)whichhelpshowwhereandwhenanearthquakemaystrike.5.SincetheyweretoldanearthquakewouldhitTokyo,Japanesepeople.A.havehadnomindtodotheirworkB.havealwaysthoughtgreatdamageitmaycauseC.havealmostforgottenaboutitD.haveboughtallthefoodsinthemarkets6.WhichofthefollowingisTRUE?A.Tokyopeopleweresurprisedatthewarning.B.Greatdisasterswouldhappenifpeoplearenotwarnedofbeforeanearthquake.C.Predictingearthquakesiscompletelyimpossibleatpresentsciencelevel.D.Accordingtoancientpeople,beforeanearthquakewecanseestrangecloudsanywhere.7.Whichisthebestwaytopredictearthquakesnowadays?A.Watchanimals.B.Byspecial“earthquakeclouds”.C.Usesatellitesystems.D.There'snoway.8.Whichcanbethebesttitleforthepassage?A.Earthquakeprediction.B.Magneticfields.C.Earthquakes.D.AnearthquakeinJapan.Ⅱ.阅读七选五Ifyouhaveeverbeendiscouragedbecauseoffailure,pleasereadon.Oftenachievingwhatyouplantodoisn'ttheimportantthing.1Twobrothersdecidedtodigadeepholebehindtheirhouse.Whiletheyweredigging,afewolderboysstoppedbytowatch.“Whatareyoudoing?”askedoneofthevisitors.“Weplantodigaholeallthewaythroughtheearth!”Oneofthebrothersvolunteeredexcitedly.Theolderboysbegantolaugh,tellingtheyoungerbrothersthatdiggingaholeallthewaythroughtheearthwasimpossible.Afteralongsilence,oneofthediggerspickedupajarfullofspiders,wormsandawidevarietyofinsects.2Thenhesaidquietlyandconfidently,“Evenifwedon'tdigaholeallthewaythroughtheearth,lookatwhatwefoundalongtheway!”3Andthatiswhatagoalisfor—tocauseustomoveinthedirectionwehavechosen,inotherwords,tohaveusdigging!Butnoteverygoalwillbefullyachieved.Noteveryjobwillendsuccessfully.Noteveryrelationshipwillendure(持续).Noteveryhopewillcometopass.Noteverylovewilllast.4Sowhenyoufailtoreachyouraim,perhapsyoucansay,“Yes,butlookatwhatIfoundalongtheway!LookatthewonderfulthingswhichhavecomeintomylifebecauseItriedtodosomething!”Itisintheprocessofdiggingthatlifeislived.5A.AndIbelieve,intheend,itisjoyinthejourneythattrulymatters.B.Heopenedthejarandshowedthethingscontainedinittothelaughingvisitors.C.Herea
