allowedholderstodemandprivateshoppingspreesattheworld'smostexclusiveshopsandto

summonhelicoptersinthemiddleofSahara.Americanexpressvehementlydeniestheexistence

ofsuchachargecard.Butthepersistenceofthemythsuggeststhesocialimportancecreditcards

haveforsomanyAmericans.Asonebusinesswriterputsit,"tohaveone'screditcardscanceled

isnowakintobeingexcommunicatedbythemedievalchurch."

America'sloveaffairwiththecreditcardbeganin1949,whenbusinessmanFrankX.McNamara

finishedamealinaNewYorkrestaurantandthendiscoveredhehadnocash.Inthosedays,

gasolineandstorechargecardswerecommon,butcashwasstandardforalmosteverythingelse.

TheembarrassedMcNamaracalledhiswife,whorushedovertobailhimout.Hispredicament

gavehimtheideaforDinersClub.Withinayearsome200peoplecarriedtheworld'sfirst

multi-usecreditcard.

Theproblemwastopersuadeenoughpeopletocarrythecards.DinersClubturnedto

promotions.Itgaveawayaround-the-worldtriponapopulartelevisionshow.Thewinners

chargedtheirexpensesandmadeit"fromNewYorktoNewYorkwithoutadieintheirpockets".

Banks,sensingamonglessaffluentapent-updesiretospend,beganissuingcardsoftheirown.

ThefirsttoturnaprofitwasBankofAmerica'sBankAmericard.Bankersfromalloverthecountry

descendedonitsCaliforniaheadquarterstolearnthesecretofitssuccess-somanythatin1966

BankAmericard,todayknownasVisa,beganformingallianceswithbanksoutsidethestate.The

BankAmericardnetworksoonfacedacompetitorwhenWellsFargoBankjoinedwith77others

tocreatewhatbecameMasterCharge.Afterscoopingup1.3millionmore"EverythingCard"

holdersfromwhatwasthenFirstNationalCityBank,MasterCharge-today'sMaster

Card-becameforawhilethebiggestbankcardinthecountry.

Fivemillionholidaycredit-cardshopperswouldhavecreatedabonanzaforthebanks,butin

therushtomarket,thehankshadbeenlessthancautiousinassemblingtheirlists.Somefamilies

received15cards.Deadpeopleandbabiesgotcards.EvenadachshundnamedAliceGriffinwas

sentonethatpromisedshewouldbewelcomedasa"preferredcustomer"atChicago'sfinest

restaurants.

HundredsofChicagoansdiscoveredtheycoulduseorsellacarthey"found",andbylaw,the

personwhosenameappearedonitwasliableforthecharges-evenifheorshehadnever

requestedorreceivedthecard.

Whentheprimeratehit20%in1981,thebanksfoundthatconsumersdidn'tmindpayingrates

of18-22%ontheircredit-cardbalance.Highinterestrateshelpedattractnewplayersintothe

credit-cardarea,includingsears'DiscoverCardandVisa.Airlines,carandinsurancecompanies,

evenlong-distancephonecompaniesalliedthemselveswithbankstooffercreditcards.Experts

estimatetherearefrom15,000to19,000differentcardsavailableinthecountry.

Ofcourse,creditcardshavenotonlyreplacedcashformanypurposes,butalsoineffecthave
