JohnFrederickKensettwasbomonMarch22,1816inCheshire,Connecticut.He

KensettisbestknownforhislandscapeofNewYorkandNewEnglandandseascapes

amonumentalcanvas(巨幅油画)ofMountWashingtonthathasbecomeasignofWhite

Kensetfsstyleevolvedgradually,fromthetraditionalHudsonRiverSchoolmannerin

the1850sintothemoreimprovedLuministstyleinhislateryears.Bytheearly1870s

KensettwasspendingconsiderabletimeathishomeonContentmentIsland,onLongIsland

SoundnearDarienConnecticut.

ItwasduringthistimethatKensettpaintedsomeofhisfinestworks.Manyofthesewere

seascapes,themajorexamplebeingEaton'sNeck,LongIsland(1872)nowinthecollection

oftheMetropolitanMuseumofArtinNewYork.

Theartistwaswidelypraisedandfinanciallysuccessfulduringhislifetime.Inturn,he

wasgenerousinsupportoftheartsandartists.HewasafullmemberoftheNational

AcademyofDesign,thefounderandpresidentoftheArtists9FundSociety,andafounderof

theMetropolitanMuseumofArt.

KensettdiedofheartfailureathisNewYorkstudioonDecember14,1872.

Realizingshemayhavemadeanimportantdiscovery,Bertocchiniteamedupwithother
