DrFiddamanwonderedwhetheritsnew-foundvirulence(毒性)wasaresultoflargestructuralchanges.To

findout,heandhiscolleaguesgottheirhandsonnearly1,000chickenbonesfromancienttimesacrossEuropeand

Asia,someofthemupto2000yearsold.SectionsofDNAfromtheseremainsweremappedontotheonesoftoday's

virus.

AstheauthorspiecedtogetherthesetsofgenesofancientMDV,however,theynoticedthatthegeneswere

arrangedidenticallytothoseinmodernspecies.Itsuggeststhattheincreasedvirulenceresultednotfromlarge

structuralchanges,butfrompointmutations(突变).Inparticular,changeshadoccurredinthearrangementofa

genecalledMEQ,whichhasanessentialroleintumour(月中瘤)formation.
