applesnail,islargerthanitsFloridacousin.Itlayseggsinthethousandsvisibleonthestalks(茎)
ofmanyofthemarshplants.
EffortstorestoreFlorida'sEvergladeshavehelpedthesnailkiteandrestorednativevegetation.
It'sbeenintheworksformorethan30yearswithacostofmorethan$20billion.Butprogressis
increasinggradually,althoughhardtomeasure.Inthemeantime,scientistssaytheinvasivesnail

westernUS.Thesewerethebasisforatmosphericmodelingthatestimatedthecontributionfrom
differentsources,andwasthefirstsuchstudytodoso.
TheyfoundthatroadswerethedominantfactorinthewesternUS,linkedtoabout85percent
ofthemicroplasticsintheair.Thesearelikelytoincludeparticlesfromtiresandbrakepadson
vehicles,andplasticsfromlitterthathadbeenbrokendown.
Theresearchersextendedtheirmodelingworktoagloballeveland.thissuggestedthatwhile
roadsarealsolikelytobethedominantdriverofairborneplasticsinEurope,SouthAmericaand
Australia,plasticsparticlesblownupfromfieldsmaybeamuchbiggerfactorinAfricaandAsia.
