TheMAinDigitalCultureandCommunicationwillhelpstudentsbetterunderstandthecontextsofdigitalmediadevelopmentsandtheuseofculturaldata.Thishumanities-basedapproachtounderstandingdigitalculturedrawsuponhistoricalandaestheticperspectives,aswellaspracticaltrainingindigitalmethodstoequipstudentstotakeuppositionsofcreativeleadershipinthedigitalage.
Digitalculturereferstotheemergenceanduseofinformationtechnologies(e.g.networkedcomputers,personalisedtechnologies,digitalimagesandsound)andtheirrelationshipwiththewayscultureiscreatedandconsumed.Thisprogrammefocusesinparticularonthecontextsofculturaldata,bywhichwemeandigitaldataabouthumancultureandsociety,pastandpresent,includingancientdocuments,artefactsandenvironmentstopresent-daysocialmedia,digitalartsandvirtualworlds.Culturaldatadrawsonadiverserangeofdigitalandcomputationalmethodsforitsmanagement,analysisandcommunication:fromdatastandards,citizenscienceandwebapps,tocomputationallinguistics,machinelearninganduser-centreddesign.TheMAfocusesonthewaysdigitaltechnologiesaretransforminghumanexperienceandartisticandhumanisticpracticesratherthanthesociologyoreconomicsofDigitalCulture.Itthereforefocusesonthecontextsoftheuseofculturaldataasrelevanttotheculturalandcreativeindustriesof:AdvertisingandMarketing;Architecture;Crafts;Design;Film,TV,VideoandRadio;IT;Publishing;Museums,Galleries,Libraries;PerformingandVisualArts(DCMS2015).
Theprogrammewillenablestudentstounderstandthewaysdigitaltechnologiesaretransforminghumanexperienceandartisticandhumanisticpractices,indisciplinesandorganisations,theuseandmanagementofdigitalmaterialandmethodologiesforcultureandheritage,andprovidelinkstomuseumsandculturalorganisations.Itwillprovidestudentswiththetransferableskillsandintellectualtrainingtopreparethemforacareerintheinformation,mediaandcommunicationsectors,thecreativeindustries,andtheculturalheritagesector(includinggalleries,libraries,archives,andmuseums),aswellasprovidinganimportantpreparationforthosewishingtopursuedoctoralresearch.Itwilladvancecriticalunderstandingoftheemergenceandcurrentstateoftheinternetanddigitaltechnologies,developskillsinanalysing,researchingandcommunicatingtheculturalandartisticimpactsofdigitaltechnologies,trainstudentsintraditionalanddigitalresearchmethods,advanceunderstandingofdigitalandcomputationalapproachestoculturaldata,enhanceskillsincommunicationofknowledgeinwrittenandotherforms,anddeveloparangeoftransferabledigitalskills(bigdataanalysis,webdevelopment,blogging,socialmediause).Thiscombinationofpracticalexperiencewithdigitalmethodswithanarts-andhumanities-basedunderstandingofdigitalculture,willequipstudentswiththerelevanttechnological,historical,aestheticandethicalperspectivestomakeinformeddesignandimplementationdecisionsregardinguseofnewtechnologiesintheirspecificfields.
Theprogrammewillgivestudentsasolidunderstandingofdigitalcultureinallitsforms.Itwillprovidestudentswiththetransferableskillsandintellectualtrainingtopreparethemforacareerinthemediaandcommunicationsectors,thecreativeindustries,andtheculturalheritagesector(includinggalleries,libraries,archives,andmuseums),aswellasprovidinganimportantpreparationforthosewishingtopursuedoctoralresearch.Theprogrammedoesnotrequirestudentstohaveprogrammingormathematicalcompetencies.
Theprogrammemakesuseoftheexpertiseoftheworld-leadingDigitalHumanitiesInstitute(DHI)andexpertisefromacrosstheFacultyofArtsandHumanities.DHIhasover25yearsofexpertiseandaninternationalreputationinthedomainofculturaldata(digitalhumanities).TheDHI’spractice-basedexpertisewillcontributeanimportantcomponentoftheskills,knowledge,andemployabilityrelatedaspectsoftheprogramme.StudentswillhaveaccesstotheDHI’sextensiveportfolioofprojects,data,clients,andindustrypartnersandbenefitfromtheinterdisciplinarylearningenvironmentrepresentedbytheDHI’sworkwithintheFacultyandinternationally,aswellascognatecross-facultyinitiativesrelatedtodigitalmethodssuchastheSheffieldInstituteforLanguageAnalytics(SILAS).TheFacultyofArtsandHumanitieshasstrengthsinlanguagesandcultures,philosophyandethics,linguistic,musical,historical,andarchaeologicaldisciplinesandmethods.TheMAinDigitalCultureandCommunicationtakesahumanistfocusratherthanemphasisingthepurelytechnologicalorsociological;culturalartefactsandorganisationsaretheprimaryfocus.
Studentsonthisprogrammewilltake180credits:

18.Learningandteachingmethods
Learningandteachingmethodsreflectthespecificlearningoutcomesoftheprogramme:theseincludelectures,workshops,practicalwork(soloandgroup;oftenusingcomputers),shortpresentationsbygroupsofstudents(preparedduringorinadvanceofeachworkshop),andQ&Asessionsintendedtoencouragedebate,demonstrations,screenings,seminars,workshops,tutorials,groupandindividualprojectwork,supervisedindependentlearning,e-learning,productionpractice,optionalworkplacementsorsimilar,largeandsmallgrouplearning.Thisencompassestutor-led,student-ledandindependentlearningsessionsanduseofarangeoftechnologicalsystemsforaccessingdata,resources,contactsandliterature,andforacquiringproductionskills.SometeachingisdesignedtofunctionremotelyusingacombinationofflippedlearningmethodswithmaterialsuploadedtoBlackboardandremotelearningtechnologies.
Independentlearningisanimportantaspectoftheprogramme,requiringbothsoloandgroup-basedwork.Workshopsandseminarswillhaveassignedindividualand/orgrouptasksaspreparatorywork.Grouptaskswilloftenbepresentedateachworkshopfordiscussionandfeedback.Whereasthecoremodules‘IntroductiontoDigitalCulture’and‘IntroductiontoCulturalData’willincludebothsoloandgroup-basedwork,thecoremodule‘ManagingDigitalProjects’willhavemoreemphasisongroupworking,asreflectedinitsassessment.Theoptionalmodules,‘LanguageAnalysis,AIandCulturomics’and‘DesigningCulturalDataProducts’willinvolveamixofsoloandgroup-basedwork,preparatoryreadingandtasks,andassessment.The60-creditdissertation-by-portfoliomodule‘DigitalCultureandCulturalDatae-Portfolio’willfocusonindependent,self-directedlearning.
Staffwillofferonehourperweekpermoduleforindividual,privateconsultationwithstudentswhowishtodiscusstheirwork,presentationsandgeneralprogress.Additionally,theDHIteachingteamwilluseSlack(

)forgroupconsultationwiththestudents;e.g.aprojectgroupmighthavequestionsinwhichtheanswersarerelevanttoeveryoneinthegroup,oranindividualstudentmighthaveaquestionwhichisrelevanttotheentirecohort.Slackisacloud-basedinstantmessagingplatformusedindistributedteam-basedprojects,soitalsointroducesstudentstoakeytypeofprojectmanagementtool.
19.Assessmentandfeedbackmethods
Formativeandsummativefeedbackisintegratedintotheprogrammeviatheteachingandlearningmethodsoftheindividualmodules.Thisincludesregularopportunitiesforfeedbackfrompeersandteachingstaffonwrittenandspokencontributions,tasksrequiringcriticalself-reflection,tasksrequiringpeerreviewandrespondingtopeerreview,individualassessmentandgroupassessmentandfeedback.Inmanycases,thisisformalisedasmodesofcontinuousassessmentwhichistheprogrammenorm,withfinalsummative-onlyassessmentsbeingtheexception.Inallcases,weaimtoprovidefeedbackonformativeassessmentswithin2weeks,withend-of-semesterformalfeedbackandmarks(provisionalonexternalexaminerandexamboardapproval)within5weeks.

Analysesoftextualandculturalformsandpracticesincludingdigitalobjects-designedtotestsubjectknowledgeandskills.(K1,K2,K6,S8,S10).

Allstudentsareassignedapersonaltutorandofferedgrouppersonaltutorialsatrelevantpointsintheprogramme:Introweek(introductionandwelcomeinduction),Semester1Week3(discussyearaheadandanyproblems),Semester2Week5(discusssemester2resultsandanyproblems),Semester2Week10(part-timestudentsonly-discussyearahead).Thesesessionsincludeopportunitiesfortutorstosharewithstudentsthebestwaystomakeuseofformativeandsummativefeedback.Inaddition,personaltutorsandmoduleleadswillofferregular‘officehours’forstudentstoconsultwiththemonanadhocbasis.
20.Programmestructureandstudentdevelopment
TheMAinDigitalCultureandCommunicationcomprises180credits,madeupoftaughtmodulesof30or15credits,andadissertationbye-portfolioof60creditscalledDigitalCultureandCulturalDatae-Portfolio.Onecreditequalsapproximately10hoursofwork.Theprogrammestructurecomprises:60creditsofcoremodules;60creditsofunrestrictedmodulesselectedfromotherPGTprogrammesofferedintheFacultiesofArtsandHumanitiesandtheSchoolofEducation(SocialSciences);andthe60creditdissertation(DigitalCultureandCulturalDatae-Portfolio).
Learninghoursincludeclasstimesuchaslectures,seminarsandotherclasses,butmostofthiswillbeindependentstudysuchasreadingandresearch,preparingcoursework,revisingforexaminationsandsoon.Ingeneral,mostpostgraduatemodulesaretaughtover12weeks.Theexactnumberanddurationofsessionsvariesanddetailscanbefoundonthedocumentationforindividualmodules.
ToachievetheawardofMAinDigitalCultureandCommunication,studentsmustcompletethetwocoremodules,‘IntroductiontoDigitalCultures’(30credits,Autumnsemester),and‘ManagingDigitalProjects’(30credits,Springsemester),andafurther30creditsofunrestrictedmodules(Springsemester).TheunrestrictedmodulesincludespecialistmodulesofferedbytheDigitalHumanitiesInstitute:‘IntroductiontoCulturalData’(30credits,Autumnsemester),andtwo15-creditmodules‘LanguageAnalysis,AIandCulturomics’and‘DesigningCulturalDataProducts’(15creditseach,Springsemester).StudentsmustalsocompleteaDigitalCultureandCulturalDatae-Portfolio(60credits).
TheMAwillrunfor12monthsforfull-timestudents,with:
--60creditsoftaughtmodulesintheAutumnsemester(IntroductiontoDigitalCulture,plus30creditsofunrestrictedmodules);
--60creditsoftaughtmodulesintheSpringsemester(ManagingDigitalProjects,plus30creditsofunrestrictedmodules).
TheDigitalCultureandCulturalDatae-Portfolioandrunforthefulldurationoftheprogramme.
