Intheancientgames,athletesreceivedprizesworthlargeamountsofmoney.Infacttheword“athlete”isanancientGreekword,meaning“onewhocompetesforaprize”.Althoughwomendidnotcompeteinthegames,therewasaseparatefestivalheldatthesametimeinhonourofHera,wifeofZeus.Atthisfestivalunmarriedgirlscompetedinfootraces.

ThemarathonwasnotaneventoftheancientOlympicGames.ThemarathonisamoderneventthatwasfirstintroducedintheOlympicGamesin1896.ItwasnamedafteravillagecalledMarathonwherethePersiansweredefeatedbyasmallGreekarmy.ThenewsofthevictorywasbroughttoAthensbysoldier,whoranthe26milesfromthevillageofMarathontothecapital.26mileswasthereforeadoptedasthedistanceofthemodernmarathonrace.
