1.Conjunctions:
Conjunctionsareessentialwordsusedtoconnectwords,phrases,orsentencestogether.Inthethirdgrade,studentslearnaboutcoordinatingconjunctionssuchas"and,""but,"and"or."Theyunderstandhowthesewordscombineideasandcreatecompoundsentences.Forexample,inasentencelike"Ilikeicecreamandchocolate,"theword"and"isaconjunctionthatconnectstwothingsthepersonlikes.
2.Adjectives:
Adjectivesarewordsusedtodescribeorgivemoreinformationaboutpeople,places,orthings.Inthethirdgrade,studentsexpandtheirknowledgeofadjectivesbeyondbasiccolorsandsizes.Theylearnmoredescriptiveadjectivessuchas"beautiful,""delicious,""furry,"etc.Thesewordshelpthemexpressthemselvesbetterwhentalkingorwritingaboutsomething.Forexample,"Thesunsetwasbeautiful"or"Thecathadsoft,furryfur."
3.Verbs:
Verbsareactionwordsthatdescribewhatsomeoneorsomethingisdoing.Inthethirdgrade,studentscontinuetodeveloptheirunderstandingofverbsbylearningnewactionwords.Theylearnwordslike"jump,""run,""swim,""fly,"etc.Thesewordshelpthemexpressactionsintheirsentences.Forexample,"Thebirdflewhighinthesky"or"Ilovetoswiminthepool."
4.Nouns:
Nounsarewordsthatrepresentpeople,places,things,andideas.Inthethirdgrade,studentsexpandtheirunderstandingofnounsbylearningaboutpropernounsandcommonnouns.Propernounsarespecificnamesofpeople,places,orthings,whilecommonnounsaregeneralnames.Forexample,"John"isapropernoun,whereas"boy"isacommonnoun.Studentsalsolearncollectivenounslike"team,""class,"and"herd,"whichrepresentagroupofthingsorpeople.
5.Prepositions:
Prepositionsarewordsusedtoshowtherelationshipbetweenanounorpronounandotherwordsinasentence.Inthirdgrade,studentslearncommonlyusedprepositionssuchas"in,""on,""at,""behind,""under,"etc.Thesewordshelpthemdescribewheresomethingislocatedorhowsomethingisdone.Forexample,"Thebookisonthetable"or"Theyplayedinthepark."
6.Adverbs:
Adverbsmodifyverbs,adjectives,orotheradverbsandprovidemoreinformationabouthow,when,orwhereanactiontakesplace.Inthethirdgrade,studentslearnadverbsthatdescribethemanner,time,place,frequency,anddegreeofanaction.Theylearnwordslike"quickly,""often,""here,""very,"etc.Forexample,"Shewalkedslowly"or"Heoftenplaysbasketball."
7.Pronouns:
Pronounsarewordsusedtoreplacenounsinasentence,avoidingrepetition.Inthethirdgrade,studentslearnaboutpersonalpronounslike"I,""you,""he,""she,"etc.Theyalsolearnpossessivepronounslike"mine,""yours,""his,""hers,"etc.Thesewordshelpthemcommunicatemoreefficientlybyusingshortersentences.Forexample,insteadofsaying"JohnwenttoJohn'shouse,"theycansay"Johnwenttohishouse."
8.Homophones:
Homophonesarewordsthatsoundthesamebuthavedifferentmeaningsandspellings.Inthethirdgrade,studentslearnaboutcommonlyconfusedhomophonessuchas"their,""there,"and"they're."Theyalsolearnwordslike"two,""to,"and"too,"whichhavedifferentmeaningsbutarepronouncedthesame.Understandinghomophoneshelpsstudentsavoidconfusionandusethecorrectwordsintheirwritingandspeaking.
9.SynonymsandAntonyms:
Inthethirdgrade,studentsstartbuildingtheirvocabularybylearningsynonymsandantonyms.Synonymsarewordswithsimilarmeanings,whileantonymsarewordswithoppositemeanings.Forexample,"happy"and"joyful"aresynonyms,while"happy"and"sad"areantonyms.Understandingsynonymsandantonymsexpandsstudents'wordchoicesandhelpsthemexpressthemselvesmoreprecisely.
10.CompoundWords:
Compoundwordsareformedbycombiningtwoormoreseparatewordstocreateanewwordwithadifferentmeaning.Inthethirdgrade,studentslearntoidentifyandcreatecompoundwords.Theyunderstandthatacompoundwordcanbemadebyjoiningtwonouns,e.g.,"cupcake"orbycombininganadjectiveandanoun,e.g.,"rainbow."Recognizingcompoundwordshelpsstudentsdecipherunfamiliarwordsandenhancestheirreadingandwritingskills.
11.PrefixesandSuffixes:Prefixesandsuffixesareaddedtothebeginningorendofwordstochangetheirmeaningorform.Inthethirdgrade,studentsexplorecommonprefixeslike"un-,""re-,""pre-,"andsuffixessuchas"-ing,""-ed,""-er,"and"-est."Thesewordpartshelpstudentsunderstandandcreatenewwords.Forexample,"unhappy"(nothappy),"rewrite"(writeagain),"preview"(lookatbefore),"running"(intheprocessofrunning),"jumped"(pasttenseofjump),"runner"(onewhoruns),and"fastest"(mostfast).12.Plurals:Pluralsareusedtoindicatemorethanoneperson,place,thing,oridea.Inthethirdgrade,studentslearntoformpluralsbyadding"-s"or"-es"tonouns,andtheyencounterirregularpluralsthatdon'tfollowthisrule.Theyunderstandthatsomenounschangetheirvowelsoundbeforeadding"-es"toformtheplural.Forexample,"cat"becomes"cats,""box"becomes"boxes,"and"child"becomes"children."13.ComparativesandSuperlatives:Comparativesandsuperlativesareusedtocomparetwoormorenounsoradjectives.Inthethirdgrade,studentslearntoformcomparativesbyadding"-er"toadjectivesandsuperlativesbyadding"-est."Theyalsolearntheuseof"than"incomparativesentencesand"the"beforesuperlatives.Forexample,"taller"(comparativeoftall),"highest"(superlativeofhigh),"fasterthan"(comparingspeed),and"thebest"(superlativeindicatingthehighestquality).14.CompoundSentences:Compoundsentencesareformedbyjoiningtwoormoreindependentclauseswithaconjunction.Inthethirdgrade,studentspracticecreatingcompoundsentencestoexpressmorecomplexideas.Theyuseconjunctionslike"and,""but,""or,"and"so"toconnectrelatedthoughts.Forexample,"Ifinishedmyhomework,soIwentouttoplay."15.QuestionWords:Questionwordsareusedtoaskquestionsaboutvariousaspectsofasentence.Inthethirdgrade,studentsbecomefamiliarwithquestionwordssuchas"who,""what,""where,""when,""why,""how,"and"which."Theylearntoformquestionsandunderstandtheinformationbeingrequested.Forexample,"Whattimeisit?"asksforspecificinformationaboutthetime.16.TimeandWeatherExpressions:Timeandweatherexpressionsareessentialfortalkingaboutdailyroutinesandtheatmospherearoundus.Inthethirdgrade,studentslearnwordsandphrasesrelatedtotimelike"morning,""afternoon,""evening,""today,""tomorrow,"and"yesterday."Theyalsolearnweather-relatedwordssuchas"sunny,""rainy,""cloudy,""windy,"and"snowy."Theseexpressionshelpstudentsdiscussdailyschedulesanddescribethecurrentorforecastedweatherconditions.17.Opposites:Oppositesarewordswithmeaningsthatareoppositetoeachother.Inthethirdgrade,studentsexpandtheirvocabularybylearningoppositewordstoexpresscontrastingideas.Theyencounterpairslike"hot-cold,""big-small,""fast-slow,""up-down,"and"in-out."Understandingoppositeshelpsstudentscommunicatemoreeffectivelyandaddsdepthtotheirlanguageskills.18.Homographs:Homographsarewordsthatarespelledthesamebuthavedifferentmeaningsandsometimesdifferentpronunciations.Inthethirdgrade,studentsencounterhomographslike"lead"(asinleadingagroup)and"lead"(themetal),or"wind"(asinwindingaclock)and"wind"(theaircurrent).Recognizinghomographshelpsstudentsdifferentiatebetweenwordsthatlookalikebuthavedistinctusesindifferentcontexts.19.Idioms:Idioms
