emotionalreactionsundercontrol,becamesignificantlyweakerwhenone-night

sleepisdisrupted.

Thisdamagecanbesostrongthatitblurs(使难以区分)thelinesaroundwhat

people.consideremotional.Forexample,whenparticipantswereexposedtoneutral

andemotionalpictures(imagesofcommutersonatrainversusphotographsof

childrencrying),fMRIrevealedthattheamygdalarespondeddifferentlytothese

pictureswhenpeoplewerewellrested.Butafterlosinganightofsleep,aperson's

amygdalarespondedstronglytobothkindsofimages;Inotherwords,thethreshold

(阈值)forwhatthebrainconsidersemotionalbecamesignificantlylowerwhenthe

amygdalacouldnotworktogetherwiththeprefrontalcortex.Suchdamaged

emotionalcontrolmakesusmorevulnerabletoanxietyandpoormood,sothateven
