PurposeofPreparatoryAssignments

Thepreparatoryactivitiesservemultiplepurposes:

Gaininsightintostudents’thinking.Studentscompletetheassignmentstoillustratetheirthinking,andweusetheassignmentstogetafeelforhowstudentsunderstandcourseconcepts.

Givestudentsinsightintoyourexpectations.Studentswilllearnaboutyourexpectationsonthespecifictopics/conceptsforfuturemajorassignmentsfromyourresponsestotheirindividualworkandyourannouncementpoststotheentireclass.

Createcommunity.Whileyoucontrolthecontentoftheannouncement—youidentifythemainideasthatyouwantstudentstogetfromtheassignment—youcanincorporateattributedquotationsandideasfromstudents’work.Seeingtheirnamesandworksregularlythroughoutthesemesterprovidesasensecommunity.

ChoosingTopicsofPreparatoryAssignments

Thetopicsforthepreparatoryassignmentsshouldbethemainpoint—conceptorskill—fromthatweekthatyourstudentswillneedtocompletetheirupcomingwritingassignment.Youcancreateyourownpreparatoryassignmentoruseoneoftheexercisesfromthetextbook.

RecommendedGradingProcedureforthePreparatoryAssignments

Readthestudents’submissionsasifyouwerelisteningtothemrespondtoyouinclass.Letthemknowifsomethingtheysaidwasgood,andgentlycorrectthemiftheymadeamistakeorseemtomisunderstandsomething.
