Hi!MynameisAdamandI'mafreshmanatseniorhighschool.Goingfromjuniorhighschoolto

seniorhighschoolisareallybigchallenge.Thefirstweekwasalittleconfusing.

First,IhadtothinkverycarefullyaboutwhichcoursesIwantedtotake.Theschooladviserhelped

mechoosethesuitableones:maths,English,chemistry,worldhistory,andChinese.IknowthatChinese

isaverydifficultlanguage,butIhopetobefluentwhenIgraduate.MyadviserrecommendedthatI

shouldsignupforadvancedliteraturebecauseIlikeEnglishandI'mgoodatit.

Ihadtochooseextra-curricularactivities,too.Itriedtojointheschoolfootballteam,butthe

coachtoldmethatIdidn'tplaywellenough.Obviously,Iwasunhappy,butIwon'tquit.I,IIfindaway

onethirdofthewholenationfeltit!Ahugecrack,eightkilometreslongand30metreswide,cut

acrosshouses,roads,andwaterways.Hardhillsofrockbecameriversofdirt.Inlessthanone

minute,alargecitylayinruins.Twothirdsofthepeoplewholivedthereweredeadorinjured.

Thousandsofchildrenwereleftwithoutparents.Thenumberofpeoplewhowerekilledorbadly

uselesspiecesofmetal.Tensofthousandsofcows,hundredsofthousandsofpigs,andmillionsof

chickensweredead.Sandnowfilledthewellsinsteadofwater.Peoplewereinshock—andthen,

laterthatafternoon,anotherbigquakeshookTangshanagain.Evenmorebuildingsfelldown.

Water,food,andelectricitywerehardtoget.Peoplebegantowonderhowlongthedisaster

wouldlast.

Buthopewasnotlost.Soonafterthequakes,thearmysent150,000soldierstoTangshanto

digoutthosewhoweretrappedandtoburythedead.Morethan10,000doctorsandnurses

cametoprovidemedicalcare.Workersbuiltsheltersforsurvivorswhosehomeshadbeen

destroyed.Hundredsofthousandsofpeoplewerehelped.Waterandfoodwerebroughtintothe

citybytrain,truck,andplane.Slowly,thecitybegantobreatheagain.

Tangshanstartedtoreviveitselfandgetbackuponitsfeet.Withstrongsupportfromthe

governmentandthetirelesseffortsofthecity*speople,anewTangshanwasbuiltuponthe

earthquakeruins.Thenewcityhasbecomeahometomorethansevenmillionpeople,withgreat

improvementsintransportation,industry,andenvironment.TangshancityhasprovedtoChina

andtherestoftheworldthatintimesofdisaster,peoplemustunifyandshowthewisdomtostay

positiveandrebuildforabrighterfuture.

Themostpowerfulearthquakeinthepast40yearscausedatsunamithatcrashedinto

coastlinesacrossAsiayesterday,killingmorethan6,500peopleinIndonesia,India,Thailand,

Malaysia,andatleastfourothercountries.Fishermen,tourists,hotels,homes,andcarswere

sweptawaybyhugewavescausedbythestrongearthquakethatreachedamagnitudeof9.0.The

underseaquakestruckaround7:00a.m.zSundayoffthewestcoastofIndonesia'sSumatraIsland.

Inthatareaalone,atleast1,870peoplewerekilled.

InSriLanka,some1,600kilometreswestofthequakecentre,thenumberofdeathsstoodat

2,498,andonemillionmorewereaffectedbythetsunami,governmentofficialssaid.Indian

officialssaidasmanyas1,900hadbeenkilledalongthesoutherncoast.Another254werefound

deadinThailandand54inthreeothercountries.InsouthernThailand,1,900peoplewerehurt

andmanymoreweremissing,localofficialssaid.z/lwashavingbreakfastwithmythreechildren

whenwaterstartedfillingmyhome.Wehadtoleaveeverythingandruntosafety/'saidChandra

Chinaiswidelyknownforitsancientcivilisationwhichhascontinuedallthewaythroughinto

moderntimes,despitethemanyupsanddownsinitshistory.Therearemanyreasonswhythis

hasbeenpossible,butoneofthemainfactorshasbeentheChinesewritingsystem.

Atthebeginning,writtenChinesewasapicture-basedlanguage.Itdatesbackseveral

thousandyearstotheuseoflonggu—animalbonesandshellsonwhichsymbolswerecarvedby

ancientChinesepeople.Someoftheancientsymbolscanstillbeseenintoday,shanzi.

BytheShangDynasty(around1600-1046BCE),thesesymbolshadbecomeawell-developed

writingsystem.Overtheyears,thesystemdevelopedintodifferentforms,asitwasatimewhen

peopleweredividedgeographicallyleadingtomanyvarietiesofdialectsandcharacters.This,

however,changedunderEmperorQinshihuangoftheQinDynasty(221-207BCE).

EmperorQinshihuangunitedthesevenmajorstatesintooneunifiedcountrywherethe

Chinesewritingsystembegantodevelopinonedirection.Thatwritingsystemwasofgreat

importanceinunitingtheChinesepeopleandculture.Eventoday,nomatterwhereChinese

peopleliveorwhatdialecttheyspeak,theycanallstillcommunicateinwriting.

WrittenChinesehasalsobecomeanimportantmeansbywhichChina'spresentisconnected

withitspast.PeopleinmodemtimescanreadtheclassicworkswhichwerewrittenbyChinesein

ancienttimes.ThehighregardfortheChinesewritingsystemcanbeseeninthedevelopmentof

Chinesecharactersasanartform,knownasChinesecalligraphy,whichhasbecomeanimportant

partofChineseculture.
