TheOlympicmotto“swifter,higher,stronger^comesfromthreeLatinwords^citus,altius,fortius”,
whichactuallymean^faster,higher,braver”.TheFrencheducator,BaronRerredeCoubertin,who
revivedtheancientOlympicGamesandin1896ledthefirstmodernOlympicGamesinAthens,
borrowedthephrasefromaDominicanpriestHenriDinon.Mr.Dinonintroducedthesewords
whilepresentingathleticprizesatacollegein1891.Buthowdidthesewordsbecomethemottoof
theOlympicGames?ItwasMichelBrealwhointroducedthisphraseattheclosingdinnerofthe
congressforthereestablishmentofthemodernOlympicGamesonJune23,1894.Later,the
InternationalOlympicCommitteeformallyadoptedthisphraseastheofficialmottooftheGames.
TheOlympicCreed
TheOlympiccreedwasalsointroducedatthe1896Games.AsstatedbyPierredeCoubertin,the
creedisasfollows:ThemostimportantthingintheOlympicGamesisnottowinbuttotakepart,
justasthemostimportantthinginlifeisnotthetriumphbutthestruggle.Theessentialthingisnot
tohaveconqueredbuttohavefoughtwell.”
TheOlympicFlag
ItwasPierredeCoubertinwhoconceivedtheideaoftheOlympicflagwithfivecoloured
interlockingringsonawhitebackround.Theringsrepresenttheunionofthefivecontinentsand
themeetingoftheathletesfromallaroundtheworldattheOlympicGames.
Today,almostacenturyaftertheflag'screation,thesixcolours,thoseoftherings(blue,yellow,
black,green,red)andthatofthewhitebackgroundwhichstandsforpeace,stillmaintaintheir
symbolismandcanbefoundinflagsacrosstheworld.TheOlympicflagwasfirstusedduringthe
AntwerpGamesin1920.

gloryofsportandthehonourofourteams.”
AttheopeningCeremonyofeachGames,oneathletefromthehostcountrytakesOlympicoath
onbehalfofallcompetingathletes.Thisparticulargestureofsports-manshipwasintroducedat
the1920GamesinAntwerp,Belgium.Acoachorteamofficialtakesasimilaroathateach
OpeningCeremony.
TheOlympicFlame
TheOlympicflameisoneofthemostvisiblesymbolsofthemodernGames.Itstraditionhas
survivedfromtheGamesofancientGreece,whereasacredflame,ignitedbythesun,burned
continuallyonthealtarofthegoddessHera.
ThemodernOlympicflamewasfirstlitin1928attheAmsterdamOlympicGames,whereit
burnedthroughoutthecompetitions.Ithasbecomeamajorsymbolforsolidarityamongnations
andembodiestheOlympicspiritencompassingtheidealsofpurity,theendeavourforperfection,
thestruggleforvictory,friendshipandpeace.
TheTorchRelay
Duringthe1896GamesinAthens,younginspiredsportsmenhadorganisedthefirsttorchrelays.
However,thetraditionoftheOlympictorchofficiallybeganattheBerlinGamesin1936.Asin
ancienttimes,thetorchislitbythesuninAncientOlympia,thenpassedfromrunnertorunnerin
arelaytothehostcity,whereitisusedtolighttheOlympicStadium'sflameduringtheGames'
