FacingtheFuture2Asmanyofusalreadyknow,havingplansinplaceforthefutureisnoguaranteethattheywillbecomereality.Inthisrespect,somepeoplearemorefortunatethanothers,ascanbeillustratedbycomparingthelivesoftwofamousauthors,born40yearsapart.Althoughtheysharedthesameambitiousandenergeticapproachtolife,theircareersunfoldedincontrastingways.3TheAmericanauthor,ErnestHemingway,bornin1899,wasfromearlyboyhoodsingle-mindedinhisambitiontowrite.Onleavinghighschool,hejoinedalocalKansasnewspaperasatraineereporter.HewentontobecomeforeigncorrespondentfortheTorontoStarandusedhisextraordinaryexperiencesinEuropeandlaterCubatoinformhiswriting.Inhiswords,"IdecidedthatIwouldwriteonestoryabouteachthingthatIknewabout."Havingsethimselfthisgoal,hewrotenovelsandshortstoriesbasedonhispersonalexperiencesoftheFirstWorldWar,theSpanishCivilWar,bullfightinganddeep-seafishing,amongstothers.HisnovelTheOldManandtheSea,aboutthethree-dayepicstrugglebetweenanelderlyfishermanandthebiggestfishhehadevercaught,wonthePulitzerPrizeforFictionin1953.HewouldlatergoontowintheNobelPrizeinLiterature.4Bycontrast,theyoungArthurConanDoyle,borninScotlandin1859,hadoriginallyworkedasadoctor.ButDoyle'smainambitionwastobecomeawriterofhistoricalnovels.Althoughsomeofhishistoricalnovelswerepublished,theirsuccesswasnothingcomparedtothestoriesofhisfictionaldetective,SherlockHolmes,whichheisstillbestknownfortothisday.5Interestingly,DoylewrotesomeofhisearlyHolmesstorieswhilehewaswaitingforpatientsinhismedicalpracticeinLondon.AfterSherlockHolmesmadehimahouseholdname,Doylegaveupmedicineanddevotedhimselfentirelytowriting.Hestilllongedtobecomeknownforhishistoricalnovelsamongstotheracademicworks.
