AndIthoughttomyself,"Butthat'swhatIwanttodo.Ilovestories.Iwanttoread."LittledidIknowthatIwouldbepartofatechnologicalrevolutionthatwouldmakethatdreamcometrue.
Iwasbornprematurebyabout10weeks,whichresultedinmyblindness,some64yearsago.Theconditionisknownasretrolentalfibroplasia,andit'snowveryrareinthedevelopedworld.LittledidIknow,lyingcurledupinmyprimbabyhumidicribin1948thatI'dbeenbornattherightplaceandtherighttime,thatIwasinacountrywhereIcouldparticipateinthetechnologicalrevolution.

Well,IwentbackandbecameanacademicatMelbourne'sMonashUniversity,andforthose25years,taperecorderswereeverythingtome.Infact,inmyofficein1990,Ihad18milesoftape.Students,familyandfriendsallreadmematerial.Mrs.LoisDoery,whomIlatercametocallmysurrogatemum,readmemanythousandsofhoursontotape.OneofthereasonsIagreedtogivethistalktodaywasthatIwashopingthatLoiswouldbeheresoIcouldintroduceyoutoherandpubliclythankher.Butsadly,herhealthhasn'tpermittedhertocometoday.ButIthankyouhere,Lois,fromthisplatform.

ItwasinventedbyRussellSmith,apassionateinventorinNewZealandwhowastryingtohelpblindpeople.Sadly,hediedinalightplanecrashin20xx,buthismemorylivesoninmyheart.Itmeant,forthefirsttime,IcouldreadbackwhatIhadtypedintoit.Ithadaspeechsynthesizer.I'dwrittenmyfirstcoauthoredlaborlawbookonatypewriterin1979purelyfrommemory.ThisnowallowedmetoreadbackwhatI'dwrittenandtoenterthecomputerworld,evenwithits84kofmemory.
In1974,thegreatRayKurzweil,theAmericaninventor,workedonbuildingamachinethatwouldscanbooksandreadthemoutinsyntheticspeech.Opticalcharacterrecognitionunitsthenonlyoperatedusuallyononefont,butbyusingcharge-coupleddeviceflatbedscannersandspeechsynthesizers,hedevelopedamachinethatcouldreadanyfont.Andhismachine,whichwasasbigasawashingmachine,waslaunchedonthe13thofJanuary,1976.IsawmyfirstcommerciallyavailableKurzweilinMarch19xx,anditblewmeaway,andinSeptember19xx,themonththatmyassociateprofessorshipatMonashUniversitywasannounced,thelawschoolgotone,andIcoulduseit.Forthefirsttime,IcouldreadwhatIwantedtoreadbyputtingabookonthescanner.Ididn'thavetobenicetopeople!

Therearemanypeoplewhohavehelpedmeinmylife,andmanythatIhaven'tmet.OneisanotherAmericaninventorTedHenter.Tedwasamotorcycleracer,butin1978hehadacaraccidentandlosthissight,whichisdevastatingifyou'retryingtoridemotorbikes.Hethenturnedtobeingawaterskierandwasachampiondisabledwaterskier.Butin19xx,heteamedupwithBillJoycetodevelopaprogramthatwouldreadoutwhatwasonthecomputerscreenfromtheNetorfromwhatwasonthecomputer.It'scalledJAWS,JobAccessWithSpeech,anditsoundslikethis.

Thistechnologythatfascinatedmein1987isnowonmyiPhoneandonyoursaswell.But,youknow,Ifindreadingwithmachinesaverylonelyprocess.Igrewupwithfamily,friends,readingtome,andIlovedthewarmthandthebreathandtheclosenessofpeoplereading.Doyoulovebeingreadto?Andoneofmymostenduringmemoriesisin1999,MaryreadingtomeandthechildrendownnearManlyBeach"HarryPotterandthePhilosopher'sStone."Isn'tthatagreatbook?Istilllovebeingclosetosomeonereadingtome.ButIwouldn'tgiveupthetechnology,becauseit'sallowedmetoleadagreatlife.
