atStanfordandColumbiaUniversity.
ThegovernmentsaystheaverageAmericanmaneatstengramsofsaltaday.TheAmericanHeart
Associationadvisesnomorethanthreegramsforhealthypeople.ItsayssaltintheAmericandiet
hasincreasedfiftypercentsincethe1970's,whilebloodpressurehasalsorisen.Lesssaltcan
leadtolowerbloodpressure.
NewYorkCityMayorMichaelBloombergisleadingeffortcalledtheNationalSaltReduction
Initiative.Theideaistoputpressureonfoodcompaniesandrestaurantstouselesssalt.But
somepeopledon,tagree.Theycallitgovernmenticlerfeoence.Theysaythatfoodcompaniesand
restaurantsarefreeandtheyknowwhattodo.Thegovernmentshouldn,tmakeanydecisionsfor
them.
