stoppedleadedgasolineinthelate1990s,afterwhichmostcountriesfollowed.

“Theremovalofleadfromgasolineisoneofthegreatestenvironmentalachievementsofalltime“saidCarol

Browner,administratoroftheEPAduringtheyear1996.“Withthousandsoftonsofleaddisappearingfromtheair,

bloodleadlevelsinourchildrenarereducedby70percent.Thismeansthatmillionsofchildrenwillberidofthe

Despitethisobviousfailure,theplasticsindustryhasbegunadecades-longcampaigntokeeptheliethatthe

materialisrecyclable,whichremindsthepublicofthetobaccoindustry'seffortstotellsmokersthatfiltered(过滤

的)cigarettesarehealthierthanunfilteredcigarettes.

Traditionalmechanicalrecycling,inwhichplasticwasteisgroundupandmelted(熔化),hasbeenaroundfor

manydecades.Nowtheplasticsindustryispromotingthebenefitsofso-calledchemicalrecycling,inwhichplastic

wasteisbrokendownusinghighheatandturnedintoalow-qualityfossilfuel.In2018,DowChemicalclaimedthat

theRenewlogychemical-recyclingfactoryinSaltLakeCitywasabletoreprocessmixedplasticwastethroughthe

“HeftyEnergyBag”programandturnitintodieselfuel(柴油).AsReutersshowedina2021survey,however,the

pyrolysis(高温分加军)processwasnotworthit.
