本文以《名利场》中女主人公蓓基·夏泼和爱米丽亚·赛特笠的人生历程所反映的女性主义社会现象为切入点分析西方女性主义在十九世纪时期所处的社会境地。这一时期许多文学作品中所展现传统妇女的形象无疑是可悲的并具有深刻寓意的,把这些具有女性主义意义的文学作品作为研究依据去感受不同时期社会对女性的定义。参考女性主义在萌芽时期的发展状况并结合如今中西方女性主义面临的现状,探讨女性主义无论早期在男性中心的社会还是现代社会下所处的艰难境地。关键词:女性主义;社会地位;独立AnInterpretationoftheSocialSituationofFeminismfromVanityFairAbstractSince19thcentury,feminism’sstatushasexperiencedgreatchangesinthehistoryofChineseandwesternliterature.FeminismhasbeenfavoredbyexpertsandscholarsinthefeministthemeofLiteraryworksmoreorlessreflectthefeminismhistorystatusindifferentperiods,exploringtheliteratureonthedevelopmentofthesocialpositionoffeminismcanmakeushaveadeeperunderstandingoffeminism.BasedonthefeministsocialphenomenonreflectedinthelifecourseoftheheroinesofVanityFair,BeckySharpandAmeliaSedley,thispaperanalyzesthesocialsituationofwesternfeminisminthe19thcentury.Theimagesoftraditionalwomeninmanyliteraryworksofthisperiodareundoubtedlysadandhaveprofoundmeanings.Theseliteraryworkswithfeministsignificancearetakenastheresearchbasistofeelthesocialdefinitionofwomenindifferentperiods.ByreferringtothedevelopmentoffeminismintheembryonicperiodandcombiningwiththecurrentsituationofChineseandwesternfeminism,thispaperdiscussesthedifficultsituationoffeminismintheearlystageinthemale-centeredsocietyorthemodernsociety.Keywords:feminism;socialstatus;independence1.Introduction1.1OutlineofVanityFairInthe19thcentury,Europeanfeminismbegantosproutundertheoppressionanddiscriminationagainstwomeninthepatriarchalsociety.Withthegradualawakeningoftheirfemaleconsciousness,moreandmorewomenbegantofaceuptotheirrolesandpursuemorerights.Thackeray,asarealisticwriter,wasinspiredbyfeminismandsupportedtheindependenceandrightsoffeminism.VanityFairrevealedthestatusquooffeminismatthattimeandcomparesitwiththeimpactoffeminismontraditionalwomen.VanityFairwasThackeray’smasterpiece,whichwasalsoamasterpieceofrealism.Itmainlydescribedthattheheroineisdiscriminatedagainstinthesociety,sosheusedavarietyoftricksandevenseducedandfawnonthepowerfulandpowerfulfamilieswithherappearance,andclimbeduptheladderbyhookorbyhook.Thischaracterwasnotaloathsomevillain,butshewasnotakindandagreeableperson,whichwasavividproductofthatsociety.Theworksbitterlysatirizedallkindsofuglyphenomenain“vanityfair”ofvariousclassesandhonors,andmadethecharacters’characteristicsmoredistinctbyusingthedescriptionofcharacters’psychologyanddetails.Theplotcanmainlybedividedintotwolines.TheonecluedescribedthelifeofBeckywhoseparentsweredeadandfamilywaspoor.AftersheleftthePinkertonGirlBoardingschool,sheseducedtheelderbrotherofAmelia,approachingMissCrawleywithotherpurpose.AndshemarriedwithyoungandhandsomeRodenbutentwinedwithSteyneLordagain.Allofthesewereresultthatsteppedintothedebauchedvanity.AnothercluewaswrittenforAmelia,agirlofpurelawwhowasleftbehindinherfamilyandsufferedfrompovertyandaffection.ShewassimpleandkindwhichwasexactlydifferentfromBecky,butshealsowasblindlyinfatuatedwithplayboyOsborne.InthemarriageofDobbinsobravededication,agoodmanwithasenseofresponsibilitybutAmeliadidn’tknowhowtocherish,althoughfinallymarried,actuallyshelostthepassionoflove.Thesetwoclueswereformthemainlineofthearticleandrunthroughthewholepaper.BydescribingthecontrastbetweenthetwofatesofBeckyandAmelia,theauthorrevealedthedecadenceoftheVictoriansocietyandreflectedthestatusandroleofwomeninthepatriarchalsociety.InthisVanityFair,bothBeckyandAmeliahavebeendeeplyanalyzedbymanyscholarsfortheirliterarycoloranduniquemeaninggiventothembythesociety,sotherewereendlessdiscussionsaboutthem.ResearchBackgroundofFeminismSinceitappeared,feminism’sstatushasexperiencedgreatchangesinthehistoryofChineseandwesternliterature.Feminismhasbeenfavoredbyexpertsandscholarsinthefeministthemeofliteraryworksmoreorlessreflectthefeminismhistorystatusindifferentperiods,exploringtheliteratureonthedevelopmentofthesocialpositionoffeminismcanmakeushaveadeeperunderstandingoffeminism.Feminismwasthebeliefinsocial,economic,andpolitical
