worksforolderpeople,too.MacLeodhasnamedthisphenomenonthe"productioneffect".It

meansthatproducingwrittenwords-that'stosay,readingthemoutloud-improvesour

memoryofthem.

Theproductioneffecthasbeenreplicatedinnumerousstudiesformorethanadecade.In

onestudyinAustralia,agroupofseven-to-ten-year-oldswerepresentedwithalistof

wordsandaskedtoreadsomesilently,andothersaloud.Afterwards,theycorrectlyrecognised

87%ofthewordsthey'dreadaloud,butonly70%ofthesilentones.

Inanotherstudy,adultsaged67to88weregiventhesametask-readingwordseither

silentlyoraloud-beforethenwritingdownallthosetheycouldremember.Theywereableto

recall27%ofthewordstheyhadreadaloud,butonly10%ofthosethey'dreadsilently.When

askedwhichonestheyrecognised,theywereabletocorrectlyidentify80%ofthewordsthey

hadreadaloud,butonly60%ofthesilentones.MacLeodandhisteamhavefoundtheeffect

canlastuptoaweekafterthereadingtask.
