LeBaronPierreDeCoubertin(1863~1937),isafamousFrencheducator,internationalsportsactivist,educatorandhistorian,thefounderofthemodernOlympicmovement.January1,1863wasborninParis,France,averywealthyaristocraticfamily.From1896to1925,heservedaschairmanoftheInternationalOlympicCommittee,anddesignedtheOlympicemblem,theOlympicGamesflag.BecauseofhisimmortalachievementsintheOlympic,theinternationalreputationasthefatheroftheOlympic.

PierredeCoubertinwasborninParisin1863,aCatholicfamilyoffaithinParis.Fatherisaroyalistbureaucrats,mothersengagedincharity,isadevoutbeliever.Coubertinistheyoungestchildinherfamilyandissenttothemilitaryschoolwhensheisyoung.Fromtheyoungage,hehasawiderangeofsportsinterest,loveboxing,boating,fencingandhorseridingandothersports.Hewassmartandstudious.Aftergraduation,headmiredthelearnedrhetoricteacherKaronpriest,sothereason,thehistoryofliteratureandhistoryhaveastronginterest,andwithgreatinteresttotheancientGreekculture.Aftergraduatingfromhighschool,hefirstenteredthemilitaryacademy,andthenstudyeducation.Forfurtherstudy,hewenttostudyintheUK.WherehestudiedthehistoryofBritisheducation,wrotethe18thcenturyBritishchildreneducatorThomasArnoldseducationalideasofacademicpapers.Arnottoncesaid:

Advocatesportsthought

UndertheinfluenceoftheancientGreekcultureandtheBritishbourgeoiseducationatthattime,hegraduallygerminatedthereformoftheFrencheducationsystemandadvocatetheideaofsports.Aftergraduatingfromcollege,Coubertindidnotlistentohisparentstopersuade,involvedinthemilitary,thelegalprofession,decidedtoengageineducationandsportsontheroad.Afterreturninghome,hepublishedthehistoryofFranceafter1870,thereformoftheeducationsystem,theguidingprincipleofmovement,idealofsportspsychology,BritishandGreekmemories,BritisheducationAndaseriesofworks,putforwardalotofreformeducationandthedevelopmentofsportsrecommendations,attractedtheattentionoftheFrenchpeople,andhadacertaininternationalinfluence.

AncientOlympicruins

Between1875and1881,undertheeffortsofEuropeanarchaeologists,theruinsoftheimmortalancientOlympicGameswereconstantlybeingexcavated,andtheresultsofexcavationwerequicklyannouncedeveryyear.Therefore,Coubertin,likesomeoftheotherpeoplewhoareinterestedinOlympia,canlistentotheannouncementinatimelyanddetailedmanner.Inthisregard,heputforwardaveryvaluableminingplan.Atthattimehewrote:TheGermansunearthedtheruinsofOlympia,butwhycannotFrancebegintorestoreherancientglorioushistory?

From1875onwards,until1881,archaeologistsinGreecetocontinuouslyexploretheancientOlympicculturalrelics,whichcausedPierresinterestandconcern.In1890,hefinallyhadtheopportunitytovisittheGreekOlympia,thebirthplaceoftheancientOlympicmovement.HebelievesthatthepromotionoftheancientOlympicspiritcanpromotethedevelopmentofinternationalsports.

RevivaloftheOlympicGames

OnDecember25,1892,PierredeCoubertingaveaspeechandmadehisfirstrevivaloftheOlympicmovementinhisspeech.

In1894inParisheldaninternationalsportsconference,decidedtosetupthefirstmodernOlympicGamesinGreece,andtheprovisionsofeveryfouryears.

OnJune23,1894,theInternationalOlympicCommitteewasformallyestablished,whentheGreekwriterVikkelas()servedasChairmanoftheInternationalOlympicCommittee,andCoubertinservedasSecretary-GeneraloftheInternationalOlympicCommittee.

Inordertoachievetheirambition,CoubertinWestcrossingtheEnglishChannel,theBritishsportscarriedouttheinvestigationcarriedout.In1887,hemadeaFrenchandBritishsecondaryeducationsystemcontrastreport,theBritishoutdoorsportsgamecontenttogiveahighevaluation,advocatedintheFrenchstudentsalsoplaycompetitivegames,andfocusonsportstoreformeducation.InMay1888,Coubertinraisedthequestionofbeingtootiredforstudentstobeoverworked.Theonlysolutionistoletthechildrenplay.Inthatyear,CoubertinbecameSecretary-GeneraloftheFrenchSchoolSportsTrainingPreparatoryCommittee.Thefollowingyear,inthepromotionofSt.Clair,theestablishmentoftheFrenchsportsfederation.Inthesameyear,CoubertinrepresentedFranceinthesportstrainingconferenceheldinBoston,UnitedStates.Duringthemeeting,hefurtherunderstoodthedynamicsofworldsportsdevelopment,keenlyfeltthatthedevelopmentofmodernsportsismovingtowardsinternationalization,anumberofinternationalorganizationsofindividualsportsfederationhavebeenestablished.Forexample,in1881establishedtheInternationalGymnasticsFederation,in1892establishedtheInternationalRowingFederationandInternationalSkatingFederationandsoon.TheseorganizationshavelaidthefoundationsforthebirthofthemodernOlympicGames.

Inordertofurtherexaminethesituationofsportsinvariouscountries,CoubertinhasworkedtirelesslytovisitsomeEuropeancountries.In1890,hislifeforthefirsttimevisitedthebirthplaceoftheOlympicmovement-GreecesOlympia.WhenhesawtheruinsoftheancientOlympicGames,hewasveryattentiveandhadtheideaofhostingtheOlympicGamesattendedbyallcountries,hopingtoenhancethefriendshipbetweentheathletes.

Thisyear,CoubertinwascommissionedbytheFrenchgovernmenttoinvestigateandstudytheuniversityssport,andhetooktheopportunitytosendaquestionnaireonthestateofthesporttomanycountriesintheworld.Throughtheinvestigation,hefoundthattheinternationalsportsorganizationsarefullofcontradictionsandconfusion,opposingemotionsareveryserious,thegrowingcommercializationofsports.ThusmakinghimrealizethatwiththeancientGreeksportshistoricalexperienceandthetraditionalinfluence,topromoteinternationalsports,anddeeplyfeltthatassoonaspossibletotheancientOlympicspirit,themodernOlympicGamesfounded,withunity,friendship,peaceSpirittoguidethegame,inordertoeliminatethefieldofsportsthereareallkindsofconfusioninthenegativetendencies.So,heactivelyembarkedonthecreationofmodernOlympicGames.

In1891,CoubertinreorganizedtheUlyssesCommitteeasSportsHighCouncil.InthesameyearhealsofoundedtheSportsReviewmagazine,wellinthisposition,warmlypromotehissportsideas.Atthattime,theworshipofCoubertinDiDongpriestfoundedanacademicclub,putforwardthefaster,higher,strongerslogan.CoubertinadmiredandendorsedtheslogananduseditasasloganfortheInternationalOlympicGames.Becauseitembodiesthehumanforeverandprogressivespirit.

November25,1892,CoubertinintheFrenchSportsFederation,thethirdanniversaryofthecommemorationoftheGeneralAssembly,publishedaspeechentitledrevivaloftheOlympicspeech,thefirsttimeheformallyputforwardtheinitiativetosetupamodernOlympicGames.

Inordertoachievethisinitiativequickly,CoubertinproposedtheFrenchSportsFederationtolaunchandconveneanimportantsportsfederationrepresentativesfromallovertheworldtoparticipateintheInternationalSportsConference,thespecificconsultationsontherevivaloftheOlympicGames.Tothisend,setupachapel,ledbytheUnitedKingdom,theUnitedStatesandtheFrenchcommunityofcelebritiescomposedofthePreparatoryCommittee,andlater,hetraveledtotheocean,wenttoBritain,theUnitedStatesandotherlocalcountries,tofurtherpromotetherevivaloftheOlympicGamesAdvocate.Underhisimpetus,aninternationalsportsconsultationwasheldinParisin1893todiscusstheissueofthecreationofthemodernOlympicGames.

AfteryearsofhardworkandcarefulpreparationbyCoubertinandhiscolleagues,theRestorationoftheOlympicGamesCongresswasheldinParisfrom18to24June1894.79representativesfrom12EuropeanandAmericancountriesattendedthemeeting.Atthishistoricmeeting,unanimouslythroughtherestorationoftheOlympicMovementcharter,todeterminethepurposeofthemodernOlympicGames,andprovidesonlyallowamateurathletestoparticipate.InordertoorganizethemodernOlympicGames,butalsoformallyestablishedtheOlympicGamespermanentleadership-theInternationalOlympicCommittee.GreekfamouspoetZeVikelaswaselectedasthefirstpresident,CoubertinwaselectedSecretary-General.ThemeetingalsodecidedthatthefirstmodernOlympicGameswasheldinGreeceinApril1896.AftertheancientOlympicGamesbythetradition,heldeveryfouryears.

InOctober1894,CoubertinvisitedtheOlympiaregionagain.Inordertosavemoneyandtransportationconvenience,hecanceledtheOlympicGamesinOlympia,theintentionoftheancientGreekstyle,decidedtobuildanewaudienceinAthens,thestadiumheldthefirstmodernOlympicGames.ThefirstOlympicGameswasheldinAthensonApril5,1896,withthehelpoftheGreekwealthybusinessmanGeorgeAveirov.

CoubertinaskedtheGamestobeheldaroundtheworld,againstGreeceasapermanentvenuefortheGames.HebelievesthattheglorioushistoryoftheancientOlympicGamesistheGreeknation,butalsoallmankind,onlytomakeitindifferentcountries,differentregionswidelydisseminatedandbecomeaninternationaleventinordertomaketheOlympicspiritflourishandmorevitality.

ForthemodernOlympicGameseffort

InordertodefendthepurityoftheOlympicspirit,in1912,CoubertinduringtheStockholmOlympicGames,publishedhismasterpieceSportsOde.Warmlyretortedsongs,toexpresshisOlympicideal.Tothisend,hewonthegoldmedaloftheOlympicGamesliteratureandartcompetition.

In1913,CoubertincarefullydesignedtheflagfortheInternationalOlympicCommittee,thatis,themiddleoftheblue,black,red,yellow,greenfivecoloredringsetintoawhiteborderlessflag.Itsymbolizestheunityofthefivecontinents,aswellastheworldathletesinafair,frankcompetitionandfriendlyspiritattheOlympicGamesmeet.

HealsoadvocatedthereleaseoftheOlympicflame,theestablishmentoftheOlympicCupandsoon.OntheissueofdeterminingthesloganoftheOlympicGames,Coubertininitiallyfeltthatthegameshouldbeguidedbythesloganofunity,friendshipandpeace.Later,oneofhisfriends,Deantheelders,putforwardthesloganoffaster,higherandstronger,andreceivedtheappreciationofCoubertintha
