farastheeyecansee,losingitselfintheshadowydistance.Littledonkeyswithharmoniously

tinklingbellsthreadtheirwayamongthethrongsofpeopleenteringandleavingthebazaar.The

roadwayisabouttwelvefeetwide,butitisnarrowedeveryfewyardsbylittlestallswheregoods

ofeveryconceivablekindaresold.Thedinofthestall-holder;cryingtheirwares,ofdonkey-boys

andportersclearingawayforthemselvesbyshoutingvigorously,andofwould-bepurchasers

arguingandbargainingiscontinuousandmakesyoudizzy.

Thenasyoupenetratedeeperintothebazaar;thenoiseoftheentrancefadesaway,andyou

cometothemutedcloth-market.Theearthenfloor,beatenhardbycountlessfeet,deadensthe

soundoffootsteps,andthevaultedmud-brickwallsandroofhavehardlyanysoundstoecho.

Theshop-keepersspeakinslow,measuredtones,andthebuyers,overwhelmedbythesepulchral

OneofthepeculiaritiesoftheEasternbazaaristhatshopkeepersdealinginthesamekindof

goodsdonotscatterthemselvesoverthebazaar;inordertoavoidcompetition,butcollectinthe

samearea,sothatpurchaserscanknowwheretofindthem,andsothattheycanformaclosely

knitguildagainstinjusticeorpersecution.Inthecloth-market,forinstance,allthesellersof

Perhapsthemostunforgettablethinginthebazaar;apartfromitsgeneralatmosphere,is

theplacewheretheymakelinseedoil.Itisavast,sombrecavernofaroom,somethirtyfeethigh

andsixtyfeetsquare,andsothickwiththedustofcenturiesthatthemudbrickwallsandvaulted

roofareonlydimlyvisible.Inthiscavernarethreemassivestonewheels,eachwithahugepole

throughitscentreasanaxle.Thepoleisattachedattheoneendtoanuprightpost,around

whichitcanrevolve,andattheothertoablind-foldedcamel,whichwalksconstantlyinacircle,

providingthemotivepowertoturnthestonewheel.Thisrevolvesinacircularstonechannel,

intowhichanattendantfeedslinseed.Thestonewheelcrushesittoapulp,whichisthenpressed

toextracttheoil.ThecamelsarethelargestandfinestIhaveeverseen,andinsuperbcondition-

muscular;massiveandstately.

Thepressingofthelinseedpulptoextracttheoilisdonebyavastramshackleapparatusof
