Undoubtedlythisyear'shypeleaderamong'quality'pictures,Ryanhasn'tgarneredawordofbadbuzzasidefromthesternanddirewarningsaboutitsoverwhelmingviolencecontent.It'snolie:Ryanmaybeoneofthegoriestfilmsevermade-itwillcertainlybethegoriesttoeverwinanOscar(whichwillcomeindroves:Ipredictseven).

AnexcellentcompanionpiecetoSchindler'sList,Spielberghasobviouslypouredhisheartintothismovie.Thewell-knownstoryofasmallgroup'ssearchforJamesRyan(Damon),whosethreebrotherswerekillednearlysimultaneously,isassimpleandaspowerfulastheycome.

Thebattlescenes,whichencompassprobably100minutesofthecirca160-minuterunningtime,areepicinproportion.Theidlemomentsinbetweenarealsoworthyourattention,although,intheendandinretrospect,theycanseemabitpithyonoccasion,especiallythebookendscenesoftheelderlyRyanreturningtoNormandytopayhisrespects.ForSpeilberg,there'snosuchthingasgoingtoofartogetyoutocry.

Still,Ryan'seasilyatopcontenderforbestfilmoftheyear,thankstothegut-wrenchingrealismthatpervadeseverysceneofthepicture.IonlyhopeSpielbergcancometogripswiththeremnantsofJurassicParkthatstillmustlingerinhisblood,makinghimtaketheeasy-cheesywayout(eg.theplanesfromabovethatsavetheday)whenworkingthroughtheactualstorygetsabittoohairy.

StevenSpielbergsayshedidn'twanthismovietolooklike"atechnicolorextravaganzaaboutWorldWarII."Itdoesn't.ExtensiveuseofhandheldcamerasostensiblymakestheaudienceoneoftheinfantrytroopswhobattlebesideCaptainJohnMiller(TomHanks).UsoldfolkrememberthoserahrahJohnWayneslashGaryCooperWWIIflicks(bothblack&whiteandtechnicolor)filledwithsloganslike"WarisHell"andthehardfoughtbattlewon.Frankly,HellwouldbeavacationcomparedtowhathappenstothetroopsthatinhabitSavingPrivateRyan.

ThefirsthalfhoursequenceistheD-DayslaughteratOmahaBeach.That'sright.Slaughter.IfIremembertheotherpressstoriesI'veread,5000menhitthebeachatOmaha.400survivedunscathed.That'saslaughter.

Crankyapologizestoy'allrightupfront,'cuzI'mgoingtobreakmypledgetoneverwritelikea"filmstudent"onthisone.Idon'tseeanywayaroundit.ThegoodnewsisthatSavingPrivateRyanisanawesomepieceoffilmmaking.Thebadnewsistheproblemoftellingyoureadershowthisawesomepieceisgoingtoriptheirgutstopieces.Howtheeffectofsuchshreddingmaykeepyoutheheckawayfromthemovietheater.Itshouldn't,butthismaybeoneofthefewtimesthattheintentofafilmissocompletelyfulfilledthatitkeepsaudiencesaway.

SinceCrankywasonceasoundman,let'sbeginwiththeworkofSoundDesignerGaryRydstrom.(Remember,you'reatroopnow...)AsyourPOVpanicsandjumpsoverthesideoftheHigginsLandingCraftatOmahaBeach,allsoundvanishesbecauseyouareunderwater.Whenwhatyouhearismutedandmuffled,there'sastrangekindofbeautyinthevisualofamachinegunbulletdisplacingairthroughwaterasithitsthesoldiernexttoyou.Thebloodmushrooms,cloudlike,outofhischestyoubreaksurfaceforair.Bodieslitterthebeach.Thenoiseissointenseyoucan'thearbattleordersyouseecomingfromthemovinglipsofyourcaptain.Asoldiernexttoyoumakesthemistakeoftakingoffhishelmet,toseewherethebulletricochetedoffofit.Bodiespopopenlikeoverripemelons,andthisisjustthebeginning.Whenyourearshaveclearedthewater,theexplosionsallaroundyoumakeyoudeaf.Bytheendoftheflick,therewillbearinginginyourears--allmixedintothesoundtrack,whichisexceptional.

Ofthetroopsin"your"unit,shortofapreexistingrecognitionfactor,youmaynotbeabletotellonegruntfromanother.(Theother"biggest"nameisEdBurns,withsmallerpartsforDennisFarinaandTedDansonasArmyOfficers).LikeArmylife,youmayidentifythemas"thecoward,"or"thebigtalker"or"thebookie."Doitwhicheverwayyouwish--youprobablywon'tbeawareoftheconnectionsyou'remakingwiththeseguys.Onceitallhitsthefan,you'llbeintoodeeptostoptheemotionaldestruction.
