Appleseed'srealnamewasJohnChapman.Chapmanwaswidelyknownbythepioneerssettlinginthewesternlandsinthe1800s.AndthenativeIndiansrespectedhimasa"whitemedicineman".However,notmuchisknownaboutChapman'searlylife,exceptthathewasborninanorth-easternstatein1774andthathismotherdiedsoonafterthat.It'salsosaidthathegrewuponhisfather'sfarm,whereappletreesgrew.
Appleseed'slegendbeganwhenheplantedhisfirstappletreesinPennsylvaniain1798.Then,hebegantravelingwest.Walkingformileseverydayandsleepingoutdoors,heplantedappletreesnearsettlements,wherehesoldthemtothepioneers.Hisapples,whichwerenotsuitableforeatingduetotheirbittertaste,wereusedtomakecider(苹果酒).Thisbecameacommondrinkforthepioneers,especiallyinplaceswherecleandrinkingwaterwasn'tavailable.
