whodroppedoutofPh.D.programswerecapableofcompetingtherequirementforthedegree.

AttritionatthePh.D.levelisalsothoughttobeawasteofpreciousfacultytimeandadrainon

universityresourcesalreadybeingusedtocapacity.Somepeopleexpressedtheopinionthatthe

shortageofhighlytrainedspecialistsandcollegeteacherscouldbereducedbypersuadingthe

dropoutstoreturntograduateschoolstocompletethePh.D."Theresultsofourresearch11Dr.

Tuckerconcluded,"didnotsupporttheseopinions**:
