TheAdventuresofTomSawyerisaliterarymasterpieces,writtenin1876bythefamousauthorMarkTwain.TomSawyerisamischievousyoungboywholivesinthesmalltownontheMississippiRivercalledSt.Petersburg.Thestorylineissimple,thebookreadslikeabiographyoramemoirofasummerinTomSawyerslife.
TomSawyerseemstobetheprecursorofandthetemplateformisfitkidssuchasDennistheMenace,MalcolmintheMiddle,andCalvinandHobbs.WhatmakesthisstorygreatisthatTomSawyerrepresentseverythingthatisgreataboutchildhood.ThebookisfilledwithTomsadventuresplayingpiratesandwarwithhisfriendJoeHarper.Tomhasatrustedfriend,HuckFinn,whofewoftheadultsapproveof.Thebookisfilledwithideasofhowtheworldworks,suchashowpiratesandrobberswork,thataresoinnocent,theycouldonlycomefromachild.Itisastoryfilledwithaction,adventure,ingeniousideas,love,andschoolyardpolitics.Thewholestoryisseeminglyacomplicationofwhatpeopledidorwishtheydidduringtheirchildhood.
Thebookisalittledifficulttoreadatfirst.Personally,ittakesmealittlewhiletogetusedtothe19thcenturydialectinthebook.OtherthanreferringtopersonsofAfricandecentinderogatoryterms(whichImsureusestermsevenyoungchildrenalreadyknow),thebookwouldbeanenjoyablereadforpeopleofallages.Ihighlyrecommendthisbookforanyonelookingtofeelyoungagain,ifjustforafewhundredpages.

ThefirstimpressionthattheboyTomgavemewasanaughty,mischievousboy,justaswhatAuntPollysaid.Heneverlackedthecuriositytoe*plorenewplaces,sometimesevenriskinghislife,whichIdidnotdareto!ThereweresomegreatadventuresofhimwithHuckorJoe.Huckwasanorphan,andJoewasTom’sclassmate.EverybodyinthesmallvillageknewTom,mainlyforTom’s—youknowkindofgallantry!
Ishouldtellyoutheadventures.TheoriginoftheattemptwasthatTomandHuckwasgettingcurioustotheworldofoutside,andtheymadeanefforttorun-away.However,whentheywereinthegraveyard,somepeopleappeared.TheywereInjunJoe,Huck’sfather,namedPotter,andadoctor.TomandHuckquicklyhidbehindthebush,andtheysawthemdiggingthecoffinsout,probablyfindingsomethingvaluable.Theydidnotrealizethatwhattheywitnessedwasamurder!TomandHuckweree*tremelyafraid,andtheyranawayrapidly.Onthecourt,Potterwasbeingaccusedofthemurderer;however,TomdeclaredthatitwasInjunJoewhousedPotter’sknifetokilltheyoungdoctor.Onhearingthis,InjunJoebroketheglassandranaway!Thisscaredeverybody,andTom’sbrother,Sid,saidthathealwaysheardTommumblingsomethingwhenhewasasleep,andsometimesevenshouting.Indeed,theaccidentwasflutteringeverybodyinthetownwithfear.
Before,TomoncefellinlovewithagirlcalledLawrence.Andheshowedoffinfrontofthegirl,tryingtowinthegirl’sheart,butLawrenceignoredTom’sappearance,anditmadeTomsad.Atpresent,TomwentforanothergirlforBecky.Yet,whenBeckyknewthatTomoncelovedLawrence(itwasprobablychildishthoughts),sherefusedTom.Tomgotsodepressedthatheresolutelycommittedthesecondescape.
HemadecontactwithHuckandJoethatafternoon,aboutwheretomeet,thecodewordsofmeeting,andtheroute,andsoonandsoforth.Eachofthembroughtsomefood,andHuckbroughtsomepipes(remindthatHuckhadnorealhome,andIhadnoideaswherehegotthethings).Atmidnight,theymetattheplace,andtheytookaraftdowntheriver.Afterdriftingforaboutseveralhours,theyfinallyreachedthedestiny.Theretheylivedforaboutseveralweeks,andwhileeverybodythoughttheyweredrowned,theyhadagreattime.Theywerenoproblemsoffoodorwatershortages.Theypromisedtobeapirate,andwouldlivethereforever.
Ifyouwereoutfromyourrelativesforalongtime,wouldn’tyoumisshome?Itwasthesameforthosechildren.Afterseveralweeks,Joefeltthathemissedhomeverymuch,andTomcouldnotseemtostophim.Onthis,TombroughtJoeandHuckhissecret—
Ononenight,whentherestoftheboysfellasleep(ofcoursetheysleptoutside),Tomcreptfromthecamp,andheadedtowardthetown.Hesneakedtohisaunt’sroom,andhidunderthebed,whileeverybody-Mary(Tom’ssister),Sid,AuntPollyandJoeHarper’smotherwerehavingameeting.Therewerealotoftears,abouthowtheboyswerekilled,andhowtheywouldtreattheboysiftheyeverlivedagain,suchthings.TomalmostwantedtogetoutofthebedandhugAuntPolly,buthecouldn’t.Atlast,everybodywenttosleep.Tomwentoutfromthebed,andflewtothecamp.Thatwasthesecret—thattheboyswillgototheirownfuneral!
