WhileOntheoriginofSpeciescreatedagreatstirwhenitwaspublishedin1859,Darwinianthoughtwasalmostcompletelyoutofvoguebytheturnofthetwentiethcentury.IttookRonaldFisher’s“GreatSynthesis”ofthe1920s,whichcombinedthegeneticworkofGregorMendelwithDarwin’sideasaboutnaturalselection,andTheodosiusDobzhansky’s“ModernSynthesis”ofthe1930s,whichwasbuiltuponFisher’sworkwithgeneticswithinaspeciesbyfocusingonhowgeneticvariationcouldcausetheoriginofanewspecies,tobegintorehabilitateDarwin.

Yet,whatisremarkableishowveryprescientDarwin,workingwithoutknowledgeofthemechanismsofheredity,provedtobe.AsprominentbiologistErnstMayrnotes,whatmadeDarwiniantheorysoremarkablewashisemphasison“populationthinking”.ThiscontraststoJean-BaptisteLamarck’stheoryofevolution,popularthroughoutthenineteenthcentury,whichpositedthatindividualschangedpersonalactionsandwill.Lamarckiantheoryisoftenexemplifiedbyagiraffeconstantlyreachinguptoeatleavesoffhighbranchesandpassingonitslengthenednecktoitschildren.
