1GroupWork

Groupworkisanimportantactivitystudentsarerequiredtodothroughoutthe

semester.Intheactivitystudentscanlistentoeachotherandshareeachother's

ideasandexperiences.Interpersonalrelationshipswilldevelopduringtheprocess

ofworkingtogether.What'smore,workinginsmallgroups,say,between3and5,

studentswillhavegreateropportunitiestoimprovetheirlisteningandspeaking

skillsthantheycanwhenthewholeclassworkstogether.

Inaddition,groupworkcanhelppracticeanddevelopfourkeyskills:

problem-solving,decision-making,criticalthinkingandcreativethinking.

Toinvolvestudentsinthisactivityeachgroupshouldhaveagroupleadertohelp

theteacherachievethisgoal.Studentsmaychangetheirgroupsevery5or6weeks

soastobeabletoknowmoreoftheirclassmates.Theymayalsotaketurnsbeing

groupleaders.

2TheProceduresofGroupDiscussion

Inanidealsmallgroupdiscussion,groupmembersareencouragedtocontribute

theirpersonalopinionsorknowledgeofaparticularissue,supportthoseopinions,

discussdifferencesofopinionwithinthegroup,andeventually,reporttothewhole

class.Asmallgroupdiscussioncanbegenerallydividedintothefollowing

procedures:

iFormingGroups

Inthefirstclassofsmallgroupdiscussion,thewholeclassisdividedintoseveral

groups.Howmanygroupsareproduced?Arethegroupsstudent-selectedor

teacher-selected?Aretheygender-mixedorproficiency-mixed?Allthesewillbe

decidedaccordingtothepracticalsituationoftheclass,forexample,howmany

studentsthereareintheclass,thepurposeoftheactivityandsoon.

iiInstructions

Theinstructionsgivenatthebeginningarecrucial:Ifthestudentsdonot

understandexactlywhattheyaretodo,theywillbeconfusedandalotoftimewill

likelybewasted.

iiiProcesses

Theteacher'sjobduringtheactivityistogofromgrouptogroup,monitor,and

eithercontributeorkeepoutoftheway—whicheverislikelytobemorehelpful.If

theteacherdoesdecidetointervene,theircontributionmaytaketheformof:

•providingapprovalandsupport,

•helpingstudentswhoarehavingdifficulty,and

•keepingthestudentsusingthetargetlanguage.

discussionisabouttofinish.

Iftheteacherimplicitlyleadsstudentstosomediscussionofthe“findings“ofthe

groups,then

theymayleaveenoughtimeforthistotakeplace.Becausethisprogressgiveseach

groupachancetoperceivedifferencesandsimilaritiesintheirwork,anditprovides

motivationforfurthergroupwork.Asaresult,thisphasebringstheclassback

togetherasawholecommunityoflearnersandevenaveryshortperiodof

whole-classdiscussionremindsstudentsthateveryoneintheroomisamemberofa

teamoflearners.

viFeedback

Afeedbacksessionusuallytakesplaceattheendofthesmallgroupdiscussion.

Feedbackonthetaskmaytakemanyforms:presentingapossiblesolution,

evaluatingsuggestions,orjustexpressingappreciationoftheeffortthathasbeen

invested.

Althoughallparticipantsinadiscussionhavetheresponsibilitytolistenand

remembersomeoftheinformationandcontributions,teachershaveaspecial

responsibilitytoretainvirtuallyeverythingsaid.Theymustdeveloptheabilityto

recallatappropriatetimeswhathasbeensaidearlierinordertoillustratepoints

madelater.

3Teacher'sPrimaryRolesinGroupDiscussion

iParticipant

Insmallgroupdiscussion,teachersneedtocommunicateopenlyandempathically

withthestudents.Theteacheropensspacesforstudentstoshareandclarifies

unfamiliarwaysofthinking.

Teachersasparticipantsimprovetheatmosphereintheclassandofferstudentsa

chancetolearnfromthem.
