•27%saiditdamagedaworkingrelationship

Thesenumbersshowhowdamagingyoucanbetoyourowncareerifyou'
renotcareful.Theredoesn,thavetobeasingle,sickeningmomentwhen
yourealizethatyoujustshovedyourfootfirmlyinyourmouth,either.Little
thingscanaddupovertimeandundermineyourcareerjustasmuchas(or
morethan)onehugelapseinjudgment.Thegoodnewsisthatifyoustay
awareofthem,theseareallthingsthatyoucancontrolbeforetheycreep
uponyouandkillyourcareer.
Over-promisingandunder-delivering.It'stemptingtopromisethemoonto
yourcolleaguesandyourclients,especiallywhenyou'rehonestand
hardworkingandbelievethatyoucandoit.Theproblemisthatthere'sno
pointincreatingadditionalpressurethatcanmakeyoulookbad.Ifyou
promisetodosomethingridiculouslyfastandyoumissthedeadlinebya
littlebit,you'lllikelythinkthatyoudidagoodjobbecauseyoustilldelivered
quickly.Butthemomentyoupromisesomethingtosomeone,theyexpect
nothingless.Youenduplookingterriblewhenyoufallshort,whichisa
shame,becauseyoucouldhavedonethesamequalityworkinthesame
amountoftimewithgreatresultsifyou'djustsetuprealisticexpectations
fromthebeginning.Thisisoneofthosesituationswhereperception
mattersmorethanreality.Don'tdeliberatelyundershootyourgoals;justbe
realisticabouttheresultsyoucandeliversothatyou'recertaintocreate
expectationsthatyouwillblowoutofthewater.
Complacency.Howlonghasitbeensinceyouproactivelylearnedanew
skill,reachedouttoyournetworkingcontacts,orevenpolishedupyour
resume?Ifyoucan,tremember,youmighthavebecomeabitcomplacent,
andcomplacencyisarealcareerkiller.It'swhathappenswhenyou'rejust
alongfortherideandassumethatnothingw川everchange.Butwe(veseen
enoughdisruption-technologicalandotherwise-overthelastfewyearsto
realizethatchangeisinevitable.Ifyou,realwaystoobusytolearn
somethingnewortoexpandyournetwork,you'vegotyourprioritiesmixed
up.However,ifyoumakecontinuousgrowthanddevelopmentapriority,
you,llbereadyforwhatevercomesyourway.
Fearofchange.Fearofchangeiscomplacency,seviltwin.Itactivelyworks
tokeepthingsthesame.I,msureyou'veseenthisonefirsthandatwork
whensomeoneutteredthedreadedwords,"Butwe'vealwaysdoneitthis
way."Thingsarechangingtoofastthesedaystolatchonsotightlytothe
statusquo,andthecostsofdoingsocanbehuge.Inonesurvey,91%of
respondentssaidthatthemostsuccessfulemployeesaretheoneswho
canadapttothechangingworkplace.Changeisaconstantpartofourlives,
bothpersonallyandprofessionally.Itdoesn'tmatterwhetheryouthink
thingsshouldchangeorwhetheryouprefertheoldways-changejustis.
Youdon'thavetolearntoloveit,butyoudohavetolearntostopresistingit
andtostartadaptingtoit.
Havinganinflatableego.Didyoueverworkwithsomeonewhohadastring
ofsuccessesandstartedthinkingthattheywerethebe-allandend-allof
superstardom?Successisgreat.Itdefinitelyboostsyourcareer,andit
feelsreally,reallygood.Theproblemsstartonceyouletitgotoyourhead.
Youstartthinkingthatsuccessisgoingtolastforeverandthatyou're
entitledtoit.Never,everbecontentwithrestingonyourlaurels.Onceyou
startthinkingthatyou'rethecat'smeow,you'resettingyourselfupforvery
painfulfailure.
Losingsightofthebigpicture.It'seasytobecomehead-downbusy,
workingsohardonwhat,srightinfrontofyouthatyoulosesightofthebig
picture.Butsmartpeoplelearnhowtokeepthisincheckbyweighingtheir
dailyprioritiesagainstacarefullycalculatedgoal.It'snotthattheydon't
careaboutsmall-scalework;theyjusthavethedisciplineandperspective
toadjusttheircourseasnecessary.Lifeisallaboutthebigpicture,and
whenyoulosesightofit,everythingsuffers.
Negativity.Sometimeswhenyou,refeelingnegativeanddown,yourmood
canleakoutandaffectotherpeople,evenifyoudon'tintenditto.Youwere
hiredtomakeyourboss'sandyourteam'sjobseasier,notharder.People
whospreadnegativitythroughtheirdepartmentandcomplainaboutthe
workorotherpeoplecomplicatethingsforeveryoneelse.Ifpeoplealways
havetotiptoearoundyousoasnottodislodgethatmassivechiponyour
shoulder,theyareunlikelytobewillingtodoitforverylong.
Lowemotionalintelligence(EQ).Everyoneknowsthatyoucangetfiredfor
beingunableorunwillingtoplaynicelywithothers,butwhattripsupalotof
peopleishavingapoorlydevelopedpokerface.Ifeveryonecantellwhen
you'reboredorirritatedorthatyouthinksomethingacolleaguesaysis
stupid,thiswillcatchupwithyou.Emotionaloutbursts,belittlingothers,
shuttingco-workersdownwhentheyspeak,lowself-awareness,andjust
generallybeingdifficultareotherwaysthatalackofemotionalintelligence
willdogreatharmtoyourcareer.
Suckinguptoyourboss.Somepeoplesuckuptotheirbossandcallit
managingup,butthatisn'tthecaseatall.Suckinguphasnothingtodo
witharealrelationshipbuiltonrespect;itissneakyandunderhanded.
Suck-upstrytogetaheadbystrokingtheboss'segoinsteadofearninghis
orherfavor.Thatdoesn'tgooverwellwithcolleagueswhoaretryingto
makeitonmerit.Yes,youwanttobolsteryourrelationshipwithyourboss,
butnotbyunderminingyourcolleagues.That'sthekeydistinctionhere.For
aboss-employeerelationshiptowork,ithastobebasedonauthenticity.
There'snosubstituteformerit.
Playingpolitics.Workinghardtobuildstrongworkrelationshipsisvery
differentfrominstigatingconflict,choosingsides,underminingcolleagues,
spreadingrumors,andalloftheotherthingsthatfallundertheumbrellaof
"playingpolitics."Again,itcomesdowntoauthenticity.Ifyoufindyourself
sneakingaroundorifyou'reembarrassedifsomeofyour
behind-the-scenesmanipulationscometolight,that'spolitics.Stickto
strategiesyou(dbeproudtodiscussinfrontofyourcolleagues.
BringingItAllTogether
Alotofpeoplemakethemistakeofthinkingthattheycanonlydamagetheir
careersbymakingonehugemisstep,buttherealityisthatit,susuallynot
thatdramatic
13QuestionsThatWillChangeYourLife
Whenthingsaren'tgoingquitethewayyou(dlikethemto,it'softenthe
