HowViolentAreSchools?

AlthoughthestoriesfromLittletonandotherschoolshavebeenhorrifying,crimeinschoolsisactuallydeclining.In1993,therewere164crimesforevery1,000studentsages12to18.In1996,thenumberhaddroppedto128per1,000.Furthermore,accordingtotheCentersforDiseaseControlandPrevention(CDCP),lessthanonepercentofallmurdersamongschoolchildrenages5-19happeninoraroundschoolgroundsoronthewaytoorfromschool.Still,manyexpertsbelievethatisnotgoodenough.The

Manyexpertssaythataddingmoresecuritymeasuresisnotenough.RonaldStephensoftheNationalSchoolSafetyCouncilsaidthatonegoodwaytostopcrimeistohelpkidsbeforetroublestarts."Teachersneedtolookforearlywarningsignsandprovidecounselingandsupportforkidswhoareatrisk."

Society'sResponsibility

ManyexpertsbelievethattheshootingsatColumbineandotherschoolsarenotjustaschoolproblem.TheysaythatproblemsinAmericansocietyalsoplayarole.Someexpertssaythereistoomuchviolenceinthemedia,includingmovies,music,andTV.TheAmericanAcademyofYoungPeople'sHealthhasurgedalimittotheamountofTVkidswatchbecauseitistooviolent.

PresidentandMrs.Clintonrecentlymadeaseriesofpublicserviceannouncementsfortelevision.Inonead,thePresidenttellsparents:"Ourchildrenneedourhelptodealwithtoughissueslikeviolence.Pleasetalktoyourkids.Helpthemunderstand."PresidentClintonalsoannounced$15millioningrantstoschoolsandorganizationsthatfightschool-relatedcrimes.

Noteveryoneagreesthatmediaviolenceisamajorcauseofviolencebykids."Manyyoungpeopleviewviolentmoviesandvideogames,butmostofthemdonotshootuptheirschoolsasaresult,"DebraJacobsoftheACLUsaid.SociologistBonnieBerryagrees."Ithinktheproblemisguns,"shesaid."Alotofpeoplearesayingthatyoungpeopletodayaremoresetapartthantheywere.Idon'tthinkso.Buttheydohaveaccesstolotsofguns,andtodangerousguns."
