IntheUnitedStates,ithadbeencommonpracticesincethelate1960snotosuppressnaturalforestfires.The“letitburn”policyassumedthatforestfirewouldburnthemselvesoutquickly,withoutcausingmuchdamage.However,inthesummerof1988,forestfiresinYellowstone,themostfamousnationalparkinthecountry,burnedformorethantwomonthsandspreadoverahugearea,encompassingmorethan800,000acres.Becauseofthelargescaleofthedamage,manypeoplecalledforreplacingthe“letitburn”policywithapolicyofextinguishingforestfiresassoonastheyappeared.Threekindsofdamagecausedbythe“letitburn”policywereemphasizedbycriticsofthepolicy.

First,Yellowstonefirescausedtremendousdamagetothepark’streesandother

vegetation.Whenthefiresfinallydiedout,nearlyonethirdofYellowstone’slandhadbeenscorched.Treeswerecharredandblackenedfromflamesandsmoke.Smallerplantswereentirelyincinerated.Whathadbeenanationaltreasurenowseemedlikeadevastatedwasteland.

Second,theparkwildlifewasaffectedaswell.Largeanimalslikedeerandelkwereseenfleeingthefire.Manysmallerspecieswereprobablyunabletoescape.Therewasalsoconcernthatthedestructionofhabitatsandthedisruptionoffoodchainswouldmakeitimpossiblefortheanimalsthatsurvivedthefiretoreturn.

Third,thefirescompromisedthevalueoftheparkasatouristattraction,whichinturnhadnegativeconsequencesforthelocaleconomy.Withseveralthousandacresoftheparkengulfedinflames,thetouristseasonwascutshort,andalargenumberofvisitorsdecidedtostayaway.Ofcourse,localbusinessesthatdependedonparkvisitorssufferedasaresult.

First,vegetation.Asyoumightimagine,scorchedareaswereintimecolonizedbynewplants.Asamatteroffact,theplantsinYellowstonebecamemorediversebecausethefirecreatedanopportunityforcertainplantsthatcouldnotgrowotherwise.Forexample,areaswherethetreeshavebeendestroyedbyfirecouldnowbetakenoverbysmallerplantsthatneededopenandshadedspacetogrow.Andanotherexample,seedsofcertainplantsspecieswon’tgerminateunlessthey’reexposedtoveryhighlevelsofheat.So,thoseplantsstartedappearingafterthefireaswell.

It’sasimilarstorywiththeanimals.Notonlydidtheirpopulationrecover,butthefirealsocreatednewopportunities.Forinstance,thesmallplantsthatreplacedtreesafterthefirecreatedanidealhabitatforcertainsmallanimalslikerabbitsandhares.Andwhenrabbitsandharesstartedthriving,sodidsomepredatorsthatdependedonthemforfood.So,certainfoodchainsactuallybecamestrongerafterthefirethantheywerebefore.

Andlast,fireslike1988Yellowstonefirewouldbeaproblemfortourismiftheyhappenedeveryyear.Buttheydon’t.itwasaveryunusualcombinationoffactorsthatyear,lowrainfall,unusuallystrongwinds,accumulationofdryundergrowththatcausedfiretobesomassive.Thiscombinationhasnotoc
