Theevaluationofchildren’spsychologicalandbehavioralproblemsisessentialinidentifyingandaddressingtheirneeds.Professionalsworkingwithchildrenmustassesstheirmentalhealthandbehaviortogainabetterunderstandingofthechild,identifytheproblemareas,anddevelopeffectiveinterventionstrategies.OneofthemostwidelyusedassessmenttoolsistheAchenbach'sChildBehaviorChecklist(CBCL).Thispaperdiscussestheevaluationtoolanditssignificanceinassessingchildren'smentalhealthandbehavior.
Achenbach'sChildBehaviorChecklist(CBCL)
TheAchenbach'sCBCLisawidelyusedassessmenttoolfortheevaluationofchildren'smentalhealthandbehavioralissues.Thechecklistisastandardizedquestionnairethatisbasedonparents'ratingsoftheirchildren'sbehavior.Itisusedtoassessemotionalandbehavioralissuesinchildrenaged6-18years.TheCBCLprovidesinformationaboutthechild'spresentbehavioral,emotional,andsocialfunctioning.
TheCBCLiscomprisedof118behavioralandemotionalitemsthatassessvariousaspectsofchildren'sbehavior.Theitemsaredividedintoeightgroups:withdrawn,anxious/depressed,somaticcomplaints,socialproblems,thoughtproblems,attentionproblems,delinquentbehavior,andaggressivebehavior.Theitemsineachgrouparedesignedtoassessspecificaspectsofthechild'sbehavior,emotions,andsocialfunctioning.Parentsratethefrequencyandintensityofeachbehaviorona3-pointscalefrom0(nottrue)to2(verytrueoroftentrue).
Theevaluationtoolhasbeenwidelyusedinresearch,clinicalsettings,andschools.Itisusedtoevaluateawiderangeofmentalhealthandbehavioralproblems,includingdepression,anxiety,attentiondeficithyperactivitydisorder(ADHD),conductdisorders,andotheremotionalandbehavioraldisorders.TheCBCLcanbeusedasascreeningtooltoidentifychildrenwhomayneedfurtherevaluationandreferraltomentalhealthprofessionals.
