TheIliadisanancientGreekepicpoembyHomer.SetduringtheTrojanWar,theten-yearsiegeofthecityofTroybyacoalitionofGreekstates,ittellsofthebattlesandeventsduringtheweeksofaquarrelbetweenKingAgamemnonandthewarriorAchilles.TheepicpoemOdysseyfocusesontheGreekcharacterOdysseusandhisten-yearjourneyfromTroytoIthacaafterthefallofTroy(Trojanwar).TheGreekgodsresembledhumansinformandshowedhumanfeelings.

Theognoy,meaning"thegenealogyorbirthofthegods",isapoembyHesiod(8th–7thcenturyBC)describingtheoriginsandgenealogiesofGreekpolytheism.

Zeuswastheheadofthegods,andthespiritualfatherofgodsandpeople.HerawasthewifeofZeus,thequeenofheavenandtheguardianofmarriage.Athenawasthegoddessofwisdomandwar.Apollowasthegodoflight,poetry,andmusic.Areswasthegodofwar.Aphrodite,whoseRomannamewasVenus,wasthegoddessoflove.Dionysus,thegodofwineandpleasure,wasperhapsthemostpopulargodsinancientGreek.TheGreeksdevotedmanyfestivalstothisearthlygod,andinsomeregionshebecameasimportantasZeus.Prometheus:Prometheuswasatitan.Hestolefirefromheavenandsecretlybroughtitdowntomen.Flyingintoarage,ZeuslettheothergodschainPrometheustoarockonMountCaucasus,whereahungryeagleevertoreathisliverwhichevergrewagain.Hisperiodofpainwastobethirty-thousandyears.AtlastaherocalledHeracleskilledtheeagleandsetthefriendofmankindfree.

Pygmalion:Pygmalionwasasculptor,andhadmadewithwonderfulskillastatueofivory,sobeautifulthatnolivingwomancouldbecomparedtoitinbeauty.Hefellinlovewiththestatue,whoeventuallyturnedaliveandbecamehisownwife.:TheGreekSphinxwasafemalecreature,sometimesdepictedasawingedlionwithafemininehead,andsometimesasafemalewiththebreast,pawsandclawsofalion,asnaketailandbirdwings.ShesatonahighrocknearThebesandposedariddletoallwhopassed.Theriddlewas:“Whathasfourfeet,twofeetandthreefeet,butonevoice?”Thosewhocouldnotsolvetheriddlewerestrangledbyher.FinallyOedipuscamealongandsolvedtheriddle.Afterhearingthecorrectanswer,theSphinxthrewherselfheadlongdowntherock.

Oedipus:OedipuswasamythicalGreekkingofThebes.AtragicheroinGreekmythology,Oedipusaccidentallyfulfilledaprophecythathewouldendupkillinghisfatherandmarryinghismother,therebybringingdisastertohiscityandfamily.OedipustheKingwaswrittenbySophocles,oneofthreeancientGreektragedianswhoseplayshavesurvived.ManycommonexpressionscandemonstrateGreekmythology'simpactonmodernsocieties:

10.AllkingsoftheMiddleAgesspokeFrenchastheirmothertongue.AftertheHundredYears’War,EnglandbecamecompletelyseveredfromFrance,andtheEnglishlanguagefinallytooktheplaceofFrenchinallclassesofsociety.11.“WarsoftheRoses”tookplacebetweentwoEnglishroyalfamilies,namelytheHouseofYorkandtheHouseofLancaster.SuchunrestdidnotcometoanenduntilHenryTudormarriedElizabethofYork(EdwardIV’sdaughter),thusunitingthetwoHousesandputtingthecountryundertheruleoftheTudors.12.TheCatholicChurchistheChristianchurchheadedbythePope.AllmembersofthechurchacceptthegospelofChristandtheteachingsoftheBible.AnyrevoltagainstthetraditionalChristianfaithwas“heresy”.IntheMiddleAges,thePopewasextremelypowerful.Inthe16thcentury,someofthebeliefsandpracticesoftheCatholicChurchwerequestionedbytheProtestantdoctrines.13.TheProtestantChurchreferstotheChristianchurchwhosefaithandpracticeoriginatedwiththeprinciplesofreformation.AsthePope’spoliticalpowerandreligiousauthoritydeclinedinthesixteenthcentury,ProtestantchurchessprangupinNorthernEuropeinoppositiontotheestablishedRomanCatholicChurch.14.BloodyMarywastheNicknamegiventoMaryI,HenryIII’selderdaughter,adevoutCatholicwhohadalotofProtestantsburnttodeath.ShewassucceededbyElizabethI.15.ProtestantismbecamethedominantfaithinBritaininthereignofElizabethI,whosemaininterestlayincreatingastrongunitedcountryinwhichthereshouldbenomorereligiouspersecution.16.TheElizabethagereferstotheperiodduringthereignofElizabethIinBritishhistory.Itwasanageofrealliteraryachievementandalsothatofgreatadventureonthesea.17.InthereignofJamesI,therewereanumberofCatholicconspiraciesinEnglishhistory,themostfamousbeingthe“GunpowderPlot”.ItwastheplottoblowuptheKingandParliament,inwhichamancalledGuyFawkeswascaughtinthecellarsoftheHouseofCommonsintheveryactofpreparingtheexplosives.“GuyFawkes’Night”isstillcelebratedonNovember5the
