《荀子》英译对比研究IntroductionXunzi(荀子)isaphilosophicaltextfromancientChina,attributedtothephilosopherXunKuang(荀况)wholivedduringtheWarringStatesperiod(475–221BC).Thetextemphasizestheroleofeducationandself-cultivationincreatinganorderlyandstablesociety.Ithasbeenwidelystudiedandtranslatedintovariouslanguages.Inthisessay,IwillcomparetwoEnglishtranslationsoftheXunzi,namelythetranslationbyBurtonWatsonandthetranslationbyEricHutton.Throughexaminingtheirdifferencesandsimilarities,IwillinvestigatehowdifferenttranslatorsapproachthechallengesoftranslatingaChinesephilosophicaltextintoEnglish.TranslationAnalysis1.VocabularyandTerminologyOneofthemostchallengingaspectsoftranslatingaphilosophicaltextisfindingtheappropriatevocabularyandterminologytoconveyitsmeaningaccurately.InXunzi,manykeyconceptsandtermscarryspecialmeaningsthatarerootedintheChineselanguageandculture.Forexample,theterm道(dao)connotestheideaofthewayorprinciplethatgovernstheuniverse,while性(xing)referstotheinnatenatureofhumans.TranslatorsmustchoosetheEnglishwordsthatbestcapturethenuancesandconnotationsoftheseconcepts.BurtonWatson’stranslationsusetraditionalEnglishrenderingsofChinesephilosophicalterms,suchas“heaven”for天(tian)and“virtue”for德(de).WhilethisapproachmaybefamiliartoreaderswhoarealreadyfamiliarwiththeChinesephilosophicaltradition,itcanalsobeconfusingforthosewhoarenot.Moreover,ittendstoreinforceastereotypicalviewofChinesephilosophyasmysticalandotherworldly.Ontheotherhand,EricHutton’stranslationsoftenusemorecontemporaryEnglishterms,suchas“nature”for性(xing)and“pattern”for理(li).ThisapproachmaymakethetexteasiertounderstandforreaderswhoarenotfamiliarwithChinesephilosophybutmayalsoobscuresomeofthespecificculturalandhistoricalcontextsoftheoriginaltext.2.SentenceStructureandStyleAnotherchallengeoftranslationistoconveytheauthor’swritingstyleandsentencestructure.Xunzi’sproseisoftenconciseandaphoristic,witharhythmthatisreminiscentofclassicalChinesepoetry.ThetranslatormustchoosewhethertopreservethisstyleortouseamoremodernandnaturalstyleofEnglish.BurtonWatson’stranslationsoftenretaintheaphoristicandpoeticstyleoftheoriginaltext,whichcanmakethetextmoredifficulttoreadforsomereadersbutalsoaddsacertaincharmandelegance.Forexample,histranslationoftheopeningsentencesofXunzi’schapter“Heaven”reads:“Heavenisthatwhichisabove,earthisthatwhichisbelow;thewayofheavenistobeceaselesslyactive,whilethewayofearthistobenonaction.”Ontheotherhand,EricHutton’stranslationsoftenuseamoreconciseandstraightforwardstylethatprioritizesclarityandaccessibility.Forexample,histranslationofthesamepassagereads:“Heavenisaboveandearthisbelow.Thewayofheavenistobecontinuallyactive,whilethewayofearthistobequiescent.”3.CulturalandHistoricalContextFinally,atranslatormustbeknowledgeableabouttheculturalandhistoricalcontextofthetextinordertomakeinformedchoicesabouthowtotranslatecertainphrasesorconcepts.Thisincludesunderstandingthesocialandintellectualmilieuinwhichthetextwasproduced,aswellasanyrelevantliteraryorhistoricalallusions.BurtonWatson’stranslationsofXunzioftenincludeextensivefootnotesandannotationsthatprovidehistoricalandculturalcontextforthetext.Forexample,inhistranslationofthechapter“GreaterLearning”heincludesanoteexplainingthesignificanceof“rectificationofnames”(正名zhengming),animportantconceptinancientChinesepoliticalphilosophy.Thesenotesprovidevaluablecontextforreaderswhoarenotfamiliarwiththehistoricalandculturalbackgroundofthetext.EricHutton’stranslations,ontheotherhand,generallyavoidfootnotesandannotations,optinginsteadtoprovidebriefexplanationswithinthetextitself.Thisapproachcanmakethetextmoreaccessibletogeneralreadersbutmayalsosacrificesomeofthedepthandnuancethatcanbegainedfromamoredetailedexplanation.ConclusionInconclusion,thetwotranslationsofXunzibyBurtonWatsonandEricHuttondifferintheirapproachtovocabularyandterminology,sentencestructureandstyle,andtheprovisionofculturalandhistoricalcontext.Bothtranslatorsfacethechallengeoftranslatingahighlynuancedandculturallyspecifictextinto
