mustberespected.Obviously,Whitman’ssexualthemesarebeyondthephysical.SongofMyselfSongofMyselfwasoriginallypublishedinthe1855editionofLeavesofGrassinwhichitwasthefirstoftwelvepoems.Atthetimethispoemwasuntitled,in1881Whitmangavethepoemitsfinalname:SongofMyself.InSongofMyself,Whitmanbelievedthattwopeoplecouldbe“twainyetone”,theirpathscouldbedifferent,andyettheycouldachieveakindoftranscendentcontact.SongofMyselfisahistoryofthepoet’smovementfromloafingindividualtoactivespirit.DrumTapsInMay1865WaltbeganprintinghisCivilWarliterature,entitledDrum-Taps.
