NASA'stwinrobotgeologists,theMarsExplorationRovers,launchedtowardMarsonJune10andJuly7,2003,insearchofanswersaboutthehistoryofwateronMars.TheylandedonMarsJanuary3andJanuary24PST(January4andJanuary25UTC).TheMarsExplorationRovermissionispartofNASA'sMarsExplorationProgram,along-termeffortofroboticexplorationoftheredplanet.Primaryamongthemission'sscientificgoalsistosearchforandcharacterizeawiderangeofrocksandsoilsthatholdcluestopastwateractivityonMars.ThespacecraftaretargetedtositesonoppositesidesofMarsthatappeartohavebeenaffectedbyliquidwaterinthepast.ThelandingsitesareatGusevCrater,apossibleformerlakeinagiantimpactcrater,andMeridianiPlanum,wheremineraldeposits(hematite)suggestMarshadawetpast.BackgroundInformation2.MarsExplorationRoverMission
