Unit1PartⅠPartⅡPartⅢPartⅣPartⅤReadingAReadingBNotesNewWordsPhrasesandExpressionsNewWordsPhrasesandExpressionsGlanceattheStructureoftheDieSimulatedWritingCommunicativeSpeakingBroadenYourHorizonUnit1ReadingAWhatIsDiesandMoldsWhatisadieoramold?Adieoramoldisahollowed-outblockthatisfilledwithaliquidlikeplastic,glass,metal,orceramicrawmaterials.Theliquidhardensorsetsinsidethemold,adoptingitsshape.Amoldistheoppositeofacast(seecasting).Onehalfofabronzemoldforcastingasocketedspearhead,foundatEastPennard,England.Datedtotheperiod1400-1000BC,itiswithoutparallels(Figure1-1).Moldingistheprocessofmanufacturingbyshapingpliablerawmaterialusingarigidframeormodelcalledapattern.Themanufacturerwhomakesthemoldsiscalledmoldmaker.Areleaseagentistypicallyusedtomakeremovalofthehardened/setsubstancefromthemoldeasier.Unit1Mouldsseparateintoatleasttwohalves(calledthecoreandthecavity)topermittheparttobeextracted;ingeneraltheshapeofapartmustbesuchthatitwillnotbelockedintothemould.Forexample,sidesofobjectstypicallycannotbeparallelwiththedirectionofdraw(thedirectioninwhichthecoreandcavityseparatefromeachother).Theyareangledslightly;examinationofmosthouseholdobjectsmadefromplasticwillshowthisaspectofdesign,knownasdraft.Partsthatare"bucket-like"tendtoshrinkontothecorewhilecoolingand,afterthecavityispulledaway,aretypicallyejectedusingpins.Partscanbeeasilyweldedtogetheraftermoldingtoallowforahollowpart(likeawaterjugordoll'shead)thatcouldn'tphysicallybedesignedasonemould.Morecomplexpartsareformedusingmorecomplexmoulds,whichmayrequiremoveablesections,calledslides,whichareinsertedintothemouldtoformparticularfeaturesthatcannotbeformedusingonlyacoreandacavity,butarethenwithdrawntoallowtheparttobereleased.Somemouldsevenallowpreviouslymoldedpartstobere-insertedtoallowanewplasticlayertoformaroundthefirstpart.Unit1Traditionally,moldshavebeenveryexpensivetomanufacture;therefore,theywereusuallyonlyusedinmassproductionwherethousandsofpartsarebeingproduced.MoldautomationMoldscanbehandoperated,semi-automaticorfullyautomatic.Handoperatedmoldsrequireanoperatortophysicallyremovethemoldfromthepressanddisassembleittoremovethemoldedpart.Theyareusedforverysmallquantities(1-500parts)orpartsthathaveundercuts,threadsorothercomplicatedfeatures.Theyhavelongoperatingcycles(2-5minutesormore)andbynaturearelaborintensivetooperate.Semi-automaticmoldsaretypicallymountedinthepressandrequireanoperatoronlytoperformaspecificoperationofthecycle(i.e.,removeacore,placeaninsert,removethepartfromanundercut).Theycanbeverycosteffectiveforinsertmoldingorwhenquantitiesdonotallowfortheexpenseofcorepulls,camsorunscrewingdevices.Machinecycletimescanapproachthatofautomaticmolds,butsocantheircost.Unit1Fullyautomaticmoldsrunwithnooperator.Theymayutilizeavarietyofmechanicaldevicestofacilitatepartremovalsuchasmoldsweeps,airblasts,spruepickersorrobots.Theymaycontaincorepulls,camstoremoveundercuts,multipleplates,hotrunnerorinsulatedrunnersystems,unscrewingdevicesoranynumberofdevicesandtechniquestoimproveefficiency(Figure2-1).Partsarenormallyfinishedasmoldedwithnopostoperations,beyondvalueaddedoperations,required.Unit1MoldMaterialsMouldsaretypicallyconstructedfromhardenedsteeloraluminium.Thechoiceofmaterialtobuildamouldisprimarilyoneofeconomics.Steelmouldsgenerallycostmoretoconstruct,buttheirlongerlifespanwilloffsetthehigherinitialcostoverahighernumberofpartsmadeinthemouldbeforewearingout.Aluminiummouldscancostsubstantiallyless,andwhendesignedandmachinedwithmoderncomputerizedequipment,canbeeconomicalformoldinghundredsoreventensofthousandsofparts.Unit1Notes:1.Theyareangledslightly;examinationofmosthouseholdobjectsmadefromplasticwillshowthisaspectofdesign,knownasdraft.本句中的madefromplastic为objects的后置定语;全句可译为:经过仔细检查,大多数家用塑料制品都会显示出图纸的标注方向,我们称之为草图。2.Aluminiummouldscancostsubstantiallyless,andwhendesignedandmachinedwithmoderncomputerizedequipment,canbeeconomicalformoldinghundredsoreventensofthousandsofparts.句中when引导时间状语,其中省略了主语aluminiummoulds;全句可译为:铝材模具成本会大大地减少,当用现代计算机设备设计和加工时,用铝材模具定型数以百计、甚至是数以万计的零件会很经济。Unit1die
