ButincomparingastudyofCaliforniaforestsdoneinthe1920sand1930swithanotheronebetween2001

and2010,McIntyreandhiscolleaguesdocumentedawidespreaddeathofbigtreesthatwasevidentevenin

wildlandsprotectedfromwoodcuttingordevelopment.

Thelossofbigtreeswasgreatestinareaswheretreeshadsufferedthegreatestwatershortage.Theresearchers

figuredoutwaterstresswithacomputermodelthatcalculatedhowmuchwatertreesweregettingincomparison

withhowmuchtheyneeded,takingintoaccountsuchthingsasrainfall,airtemperature,dampnessofsoil,andthe

timingofsnowmelt(融雪).
