Shouldthestatesubsidizethem?Itwillholdanothermeetingsoon.Butthediscussionsnowseemoutof
date.
Inmuchoftheworldthereisthesignofcrisis.GermanandBrazilianpapershaveshruggedoffthe
recession.EvenAmericannewspapers,whichinhabitthemosttroubledcomeoftheglobalindustry,have
notonlysurvivedbutoftenreturnedtoprofit.Notthe20%profitmarginsthatwereroutineafewyears
ago,butprofitallthesame.
Ithasnotbeenmuchfun.Manypapersstayedafloatbypushingjournalistsoverboard.TheAmerican
SocietyofNewsEditorsreckonsthat13,500newsroomjobshavegonesince2007.Readersarepaying
moreforslimmerproducts.Somepapersevenhadthenervetorefusedeliverytodistantsuburbs.Yet
