(原文)First,underlyingtheMet’sfinancialchallengesistheproblemwiththeacquisitionspolicy.RecentdirectorsoftheMetdidnotaddmuchtothemuseum’smoderncollection.TheargumentwasthatmuseumssuchastheMoMAwerealreadyprovidingsuchworksintheircollectionsandthattheacquisitionofcontemporaryartbylivingartistswasproblematicandrisky.However,giventhefactthatmuseum-goersincreasinglyfavorcontemporaryart,therevenueoftheMetwilllikelyfallifitisn’tabletokeepupwiththetastesofthecustomers.Andbythetimeitmightrecognizethis,it’salreadytoolatetodomuchaboutitbecausethecoststoacquirethein-demandartissky-high.Thisleadstoasecondcriticalissue—thechangingdistributionofincomeanditseffectsonmuseumfinanceandoperation.
