22、rs,with a final income of 978 million dollars.We operatedfrom our v headquarters in Rochester New York State in 160 countries with 55,000employees,with over half of those in the USA.This next chart shows you how thecorporation is split into four divisions.First of all,theres Xerox Global ServicesExt
23、ract 2 And finally theres Xerox Innovation with five centres in the UnitedStates,Canada and Europe.Note that six percent of revenue was dedicated to researchand development last year as the key part of our mission statement is,and I quote,tohelp people find better ways to do great work.OK,lets move

25、uldbe unrecognisable to the people who founded the original company in 1906 and evencompared to the second half of the twentieth century.More and more offices aremoving from black and white printing to colour and from paper documents toelectronic documents.These are clearly the future opportunities

33、n asked to find some art forImy s offices .Where would I started ?Well,the first stage in selecting art is normally for one of our art consultants tovisit you on site to assess the location,the size of the area and the style of thebuilding ,and so on.How much difference does it make where I actually
34、 put the paintings?IA great deal.Art needs to be placed taking into account the function of aspace.Different types of art are appropriate for different areas.Once we have an ideaabout what kind of work it is you do and how the space is used,then we begin to findartworks and present a selection of ar
35、t for your business and building .We can do thison-site or you can visit our galleries.The whole thing is a two-way collaborativeprocess.So you already have the painting?IYes,or we can ask an artist to create works for your specific space.In this case,theclient has some input but its important to re
36、member when choosing workplace artthat art is not your brand .If you ask the artist to emphasise your company image insome ll just end up with bad art.Either way ,you have an art consultant whooversees and project manages the production of any commissioned artwork,andmakes sure its completed and ins
37、talled on time and within budget.And that alsoincludes fitting appropriate lighting and any other maintenance and fitting5.2 interview art consultant(2)One thing I dont understand is how a company ever decides what to choose .IImean ,art is such a personal thing .How does anyone ever agree?s true.I
38、think its important that you t set up committees oranything .If you have a workforce of 300 and you ask everyone ,youll get 300different answers.No,you need to keep it small.Just one or two people .But choosingart for your offices isnt necessarily about choosing what the individual likes.The realben
39、efits for a business are that the artwork gives a positive image to clients.So whats a typical type of art?Is so varied but in general I suggest something strong and bold.If it s just lightcolours that no one can really see,its pointless.You need art which shows your clientsyou have good taste and t
40、hat you are successful.I often go into buildings and look at modern art and think, What is that?It isn t ofIanything.No people .Nothing Why do so many companies choose it?There are a number of reasons ,other than the fact that the managing directormight like it.You t want art that will offend anyone
41、 .So a painting of a man and awoman with no clothes on is a bad idea .Similiarly,a landscape or a painting of thecountryside is the sort of thing you have in your living room at home and doesnt lookvery corporate .Also the art needs to say what kind of company you are. Mostcompanies want to give cli
42、ents the message that says were modern and wereplanning for the future .A classical painting says were old and traditional .A paintingby a young ,modern painter gives a more positive image .And remember ,it doesn thave to be a painting .A sculpture in the reception area can be very effective ,forexa
43、mple.I Finally,all this must be very expensive .How does a company justify thousands ofpounds on this kind of thing?It can be expensive but of course many people rent works from us-as little as tenpounds a week.It also means that if you change your mind after a year or so,it s easyto change the piec
44、e .I That sounds like a good idea.5.3 artSpeaker 1 But what is it? Is that a head?Or is it an animal? I can t see how that is art.I mean,it t look like anything real.Speaker 2 I agree with you that this is nice. It reminds me of being in a caf insomewhere like Paris but if you put it here no one wil
